WTF is Ken Schram Smoking?

Published by Karl at 6:49 pm under Ken Schram

I admit it, I just do not get this guy.

Ken, for those not local to Seattle, is an opinion commentator at KOMO TV 4 and KOMO radio 1000am.  He has a comment piece that is posted on their website, and broadcast on their news as well.

Ken is generally a liberal, of the stripe that sometimes drives me nuts with his complete lack of reason.  Occasionally he takes a moderate stance though, so you never know if he is going to make you say Hoorah or Huh?

Take today’s column titled "Neo-Conservatives Smiling Again." In it he says:

It’s kinda, sorta nice to see neo-conservatives smiling again.  I mean, it’s been tough on them, what with the Bush administration such a floundering embarrassment.

No bias there…

Affectionately known as "Baghdad Jim" in neo-con circles, McDermott recently lost an appeals court ruling on a phone call he leaked to news organizations back in 1996.

That’d be the call the helped knock the political pins out from under the once powerful Speaker of the House, who once was one by the name of Newt Gingrich.

Anyway, McDermott could end up paying about $700,000 in fines for letting the American people in on Newt’s plot to put one over on the House Ethics Committee.

Um, Ken you forgot to mention the part about his actions being illegal.  So Ken is apparently an "ends justify" kinda guy?  I imagine tomorrows piece will justify Cynthia McKinney’s assualt as "she was in a hurry".

His stance on Gun Control is straight out of the Daily Kos:

A lunatic in Seattle slaughters six people at a house party.

A guy in the Midwest shoots and kills a teenager for walking across his lawn.  A minister’s wife down South blows the back of her husband’s head off while he’s sleeping.   And yet gun fanatics are outraged that people like me think that too many guns, in the hands of too many people, has created a national crisis.

Yet even though there are more than 11,000 people a year murdered by guns here in the U.S., more guns are more easily available then ever before.

Ken?  40,000 or so are killed by cars, should they ban those too?

And I know you just quit smoking, so I imagine the 400,000 annual deaths from smoking must make a ban on tobacco products high on your list right?

Well not as of 7-25-2005, when he said Indoor Smoking Bans Are A Real Drag and 12-8-2005 when he commented about  300 Inches Of Pure Spite

But he has quit now, so I am sure we will hear about his call for a ban on tobacco, right Ken?

Oh, and Ken?  What about the 50,000 a year who die of alcohol poisoning?  Prohibition on your radar too?

Of course it isn’t just the guns, its the NRA too.

The biggest gun problem in the United States?  The NRA.

Law-abiding gun owners deserve better than an obstructionist, fear-driven organization that has about as much to do with the 2nd Amendment as I do.

But as I mentioned, to be fair, he does have his reasonable moments.  Check these out, and you will see he has some fairly moderate stances:

Sobered By The Stupidity Of It All

Don’t Let The Happy Endings Fool You

Try Explaining This To 222 DUI Victims

(Aha!  So he does see the danger in alcohol!)

But I gotta say, when he goes left he really goes left, as in lock step with the DNC:

I’ve Got Good Reason To Be Paranoid

Just What Is Bush Thinking?

What better then some bush bashing…

Of course being a Seahawks Fan I kind of liked his commentary on their Super Bowl Loss:  Steelers Get Ring, We Get The Finger

No matter what the topic, you never quite know which way the man is going to swing on it.  At best he leans a little moderate, and at worst hard left.

I think a lot of it is for fun, his own personal show.  Maybe he loves the hate mail and the chance to rile the public up.  Or he may be a complex individual, someone hard to pin down to conventional labels.

Either way, he cannot honestly act surprised when his commentary draws some wild mail responses.

So bearing that in mind, when he asks if he is a liberal nutcase (I wonder if it was tongue in cheek) after posting an illogical and cliche laden anti gun rant, the answer, to me, is either:

A resounding "Hell Yeah!!

or:

A slightly confused "Well if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck…."

Whoops, probably not a good thing to say around all these wacko gun owners, huh Ken?

Curmudgeon Emeritus Ken is a moderate… Someday, when you grow up, you will be just like him!

Now now, that depends on how you define moderate.

Grumpy Kenny is far too liberal to be a proper moderate, as you tend to be sometimes.

In reality we all lean slightly one way or another. What makes us moderate is that our views tend to be less isolated to one specturm or another.  I am moderate leaning slightly conservative.  Ken leans the other way, as sometimes do you.

    Just my opinion of course.

That is the problem with radio/entertainment personalities like Ken, you just never know which way they really lean.  You really do have to consider how much of this is just show.  I have listened to him interact with listeners on the radio, sometimes he is on John Carlsons show when he gets a wild hair up his B***.  He can be unbelievably rude before anyone really has a chance to say anything.  That pretty muhc tells me he is all hot air.  So I don’t really pay much attention to him.  He’s not worth getting to worked up about.

Bravo.  You were well spoken on that one.  I wondered were Ken was coming from on that one, too.  He was a day late and dollar short.  The Baghdad Jim story broke back on the 28th and discussed on the news and in the blogosphere on the 29th.  Guess Ken needed some left wing filler for a boring week.
Baghdad Jim did something that was unethical and illegal.  He was given a pass on part of it and ordered to pay a fine.  Well 10 years later, the fine was multiplied times 10, for Baghdad Jim’s stubborness.
Not to worry as our left wing brothers and sisters have already passed the hat for about $300,000.  Guess that they will get the hip waders out and collect the rest.  Would not want Baghdad Jim to spend any of his own money on that one.
Keep up the great work you are doing with freedom of speech, while it lasts.  The left wing wackos have some legilation going through that will try to limit the blogosphere and our rights to call a toad a toad.
The Executive Director of Club for Growth, David Keating, will be on C-SPAN tomorrow morning between 9:30 to 10:00am EST to discuss the awful bill that is going through Congress to silence the 527’s. The show is the Wall Street Journal. Why is this bill so awful? Do you have a website or a web log (blog)? It will also silence YOU!If you miss the show, I believe you may be able to watch it here, and you may learn more about this bill at the Club for Growth’s blog. Please do not remain silent, or we shall be silenced by your inaction.
    Thank you and good night.
