Liberals attack Michelle Malkin

Published by Karl at 12:51 am under Idiots, Liberals

Cyber stalking is ugly, no two ways about it.  Some feel that when Michelle Malkin posted information from a student groups press release she was engaged in stalking of her own, and they have taken her to task.

Not simply satisfied with exposing her email address or phone number,  they have posted her home address, home photos, and maps of how to get to her house on their blogs.

This is the product of some sick ass people.

Jeff Goldstein notes:

Whether or not you care for Michelle Malkin’s political positions, you should be honest enough to admit that this crusade to try to intimidate her and her family—a crusade being waged by mostly anonymous cowards who no person in the blogosphere, left OR right, should encourage or countenance—is both disgraceful and, in the long run, dangerous. Not only that, but the pretext upon which it is based—the reprinting of a press release (which last I checked was INTENDED to be disseminated, and was in fact, as of yesterday, still available in its entirety on a number of leftwing sites)—is so laughable as to be insulting to anyone with even a spark of electricity traveling across his or her grey matter.

So. I am now calling for the very public condemnation and ostracizing of those who would post satellite photos and personal addresses of a their political opponents on the web. I am also calling for the public condemnation and ostracizing of those hyperpartisan bloggers / media figures who condone or applaud such actions.

Add me to your list of outraged people. Typical of ther left to take it to a personal level.

If you don't believe how un-friggin-hinged these cyber-bastards are, read This thread at DU.

And please read Michelle's response.  I love that she refuses to be cowed by these children.

Go Michelle!

Karl, I respect your military service and your disagreement with the UC Santa Cruz students, but Malkin is over the line and deserves whatever she gets.  I wish you would be a little more consistent in criticizing intolerance and hypocrisy on all side of the political spectrum. What goes around comes around, and it is doing none of us any good.  Other conservatives have recognized that Malkin is wrong in this case:  See Tacitus/Trevino: http://www.tacitus.org/story/2006/4/18/05121/9332 In an email to me, you said that "I looked over Malkin’s site carefully and she made no effort to encourage hate mail or harassment, and even posted an update condemning it."  Since you clearly acknowledge the sad state of “discourse”, do you really think that Malkin and others who publish contact information are inviting their readers to send polite letters of disagreement?  Why can’t you acknowledge that they see themselves as generals in a war and are sending in the troops?  While Malkin’s words to the contrary may provide her with legal cover, on the other hand they show she clearly understood that over the top emails to the students would be the consequence of her post. Malkin could have deflated things by taking down the students contact information, but according to this site (http://ezraklein.typepad.com/blog/2006/04/future_imperfec.html), when the students frantically called on Malkin to remove their numbers, she posted their contact information again.   The students claim they contacted her and that her disclaimer was then added to her first post. I am not happy with how liberals have responded to Malkin, but she started it.  I would think that this is an instance where you could show how seriously you mean your appeal for "independence, moeration and rare common sense". I might agree except there is a big difference in what she did and they did.  She reposted information that they themselves gave out for public knowledge.  They found private information about her and made it public.

I do not understand why you can see the difference.

Enabling maybe, but I would not always say inviting.

Why can’t you acknowledge that they see themselves as generals in a war and are sending in the troops?  While Malkin’s words to the contrary may provide her with legal cover, on the other hand they show she clearly understood that over the top emails to the students would be the consequence of her post.

I am not sure where you see that….

Malkin could have deflated things by taking down the students contact information, but according to this site (http://ezraklein.typepad.com/blog/2006/04/future_imperfec.html), when the students frantically called on Malkin to remove their numbers, she posted their contact information again

According to her she has never been contacted by the students.

The students claim they contacted her and that her disclaimer was then added to her first post. I am not happy with how liberals have responded to Malkin, but she started it.

Sorry, but is that a serious excuse?

I would think that this is an instance where you could show how seriously you mean your appeal for "independence, moeration and rare common sense". Tom (edited to fix broken html tag-LSU)

I think it plainly common sense to admit that her posting of information they intended to maske public is hardly on par with their posting pictures to her house.

I will tap dance on the windpipe of anyone that tries to harm Michelle Malkin or her family.
All she has to do is say the word and an Army of folks like me will come runnin to her neighborhood.
We will protect her the same way the Bikers protect the military families.
    GO ‘HEAD, MAKE MY DAY.

    Karl,
Malkin and others have every right to disagree with the students, but if you can’t see that Malkin deliberately started the flame wars, then you’ve simply become another parisan and really need to change your blog motto.
I condemn everyone’s behavior here.  My pointing out how a cycle of violent words or actions starts and is perpetuated should not be misinterpreted as excusing anyone’s behavor.  But even if we don not excuse, we still need to make the effort to understand, in order to back away and cool down.  There’s a rush at being a participant, isn’t there?

Thanks but I like it the way it is.  Nothing I have said is inconsistent either, because my real problem is on the disporportionate responses, on all sides.  I condemn the threats made to the students, but I cannot blame Malkin for their having released their infromation in a public press release.  it is possible they were receiving threats prior to her posting, and now are blaming her for all of it.

Yes, some conservatives over reacted, and acted inapporpriately.  That’s not Malkin’s fault.

Nor is it the students fault that some immature liberals made threats to Malkin.  For her to take a flaming over her actions is part of the blogging game, she knew that.

But it is over the top and immoral to post pictures of her family, her house and all the rest.  Their response to her posting information that is still publically available was overboard.

I can accept that.  Most of my comments were in context of how the resposes seem to escalate, something we both agree is inappropriate.

As I former journalist, I can’t ever remember printing the contact information in the release unless I was told expressly to do it by the one sending the release.I wasn’t a journalist for long. She’s been one for years. She knows better. Whether or not she agrees with the conduct of the students doesn’t matter in posting their information — they don’t deserve it.(BTW, her address has been PUBLICLY AVAILABLE on the web since April of 2004 — it’s pretty easy to find).

  7. Karlon 21 Apr 2006 at 6:55 pm

The release clearly listed the information as contact info.

It took me 2 minutes to find it not on Michelles site.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    April 11, 2006

CONTACT: Students Against War’s ad-hoc press team:
    Sam AXXXXe - XXXXXXXXX- sXXXX@ucsc.edu
    David ZlXXXXk – XXXXXXXX- dzXXX@ucsc.edu
    Janine CXXXXXa - XXXXXXX- jXXX@ucsc.edu

They put the information out there and invited contact.

    Nuff said.

Karl, your twisting yourself into a pretzel.  You claim to want responsible behavior, but you fail to condemn irresponsible behavior except in the case of liberals.  If the right acts irresponsibly, you find justifications for it.  The fact that the UCSC students made their contact information available has no bearing on Malkin’s role in calling out a blogswarm - which only sophistry can deny.
Go ahead - choose sides; it’s much more satisfying to be part of a group than to stand on the outside asking for more maturity and reflection.
    Regards, Tom

you’re gppd at putting words in my mouth

My primary objection to this is that Malking posted contact informatoin openly given by the parties for the purpose of contact.  She gave no instructions, and when the abuse began she called on people to stop it.

Maybe she should have tooken it down.  No asked her to directly, but sure that was a choice she made.

But it’s one that I have to admit i understand considering the responses she got.

They went on an organized attack, with racial slurs and obscenity, and websites posting not just her contact information, but pictures of her family and maps to her home.

Your apparent hatred of her has blinded you to being a bit fair in at least acknowledging that her haters went way over board, and on a much darker level then anything she has done.

  10. TokyoTomon 25 Apr 2006 at 9:09 pm

Karl, I don’t hate Michelle Malkin, but she is clearly someone who, like Coulter, has made it her living by dividing people, for partisan gain.  She knew there would be a blogswarm when she posted the student’s info; she has enough readers that her post called one up.  Did you send any emails yourself?
I certainly disapprove of what the libs have done in response, but that people on the left will act in the same way is predictible.  I hate the cycle of violent words, for which Malkin certainly bears some responsibility.
And I HAVE acknowledged that her haters have gone way overboard; didn’t you quote these words of mine in your prior response?  "I condemn everyone’s behavior here."

Karl, I don’t hate Michelle Malkin, but she is clearly someone who, like Coulter, has made it her living by dividing people, for partisan gain.

Obviously she supports a conservative agenda.

She knew there would be a blogswarm when she posted the student’s info; she has enough readers that her post called one up

That may be a stretch.  Did she want it?  Expect it? Hope for it?  I cannot say.  Should she have expected it?  Perhaps.  I, as cynical as I am was still taken aback by the depth of the conservative reaction.   And I was likewise dismayed by the Liberal response.

Did you send any emails yourself?

Nope.  I blogged it.  I did email a few of the students in the UW case, but i didn’t chastize, I asked questions.

I certainly disapprove of what the libs have done in response, but that people on the left will act in the same way is predictible.

    Agreed

I hate the cycle of violent words, for which Malkin certainly bears some responsibility.
And I HAVE acknowledged that her haters have gone way overboard; didn’t you quote these words of mine in your prior response?  "I condemn everyone’s behavior here."

Agreed, you like I have, have openly hoped and asked for a more temperate response on all sides.
