Breaking news: The UN security Council actually agreed on something sensible.

Published by Karl at 3:20 pm under The UN

OK, it is obvious I have no real love of the UN and the Security Council is a perfect example why.  A small number of members who have incredible power and influence, and an almost universal lack of object purpose and altruism.  They really are all in it to advance the needs of themselves, not to make the world more secure.

Including the US, lest I seem biased.

But even a broken clock is right twice a day.  In this case they jointly and unanimously voted to demand North Korea cease its missile program.

A worthy resolution.  That guy is one scary loose cannon.  Of course China who favors NK did manage to strip it of any abilty to enforce it, but it is a start.

U.N. passes resolution condemning N. Korea:  Council unanimously votes to demand nation suspends missile program

The U.N. Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution Saturday condemning North Korea’s recent missile tests and demanding that the reclusive communist nation suspend its ballistic missile program.

The agreement was reached after a last-minute compromise between Japan, the United States and Britain, who wanted a tough statement, and Russia and China, who favored weaker language.

The deal culminated 10 days of difficult negotiations.

“The council has acted swiftly and robustly in response to the reckless and condemnable act of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” said Japan’s Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, Chintaro Ito.

In the final negotiations, the council was divided on one issue: if the resolution should be adopted under Chapter 7 of the U.N. Charter, which allows for military force to make sure the resolution is obeyed.

China had threatened to veto any resolution that mentioned Chapter 7 and in the final compromise it was dropped. The resolution adopted Saturday by a 15-0 vote states that the Security Council was “acting under its special responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security.”

It demands that North Korea “suspend all activities related to its ballistic missile program,” and that Pyongyang re-establish a moratorium on missile launching.

This breaking news story will be updated.

Not that it will matter, it has no teeth, and neither do those that have voted for it. It is nothing but a bunch of hot air, same thing that happened with Saddam.

NK already said, say what you will, we will continue to test missles. So, resolutions passes, NK, probably from seeing how well it worked with Saddams says, so what, whatcha going to do about it….

And in all seriousness, what can or will be done with it?
Will they see NK in violation and pass yet another resolution, and then another…?

The only reason Saddam got removed is because the US acted on him, using the resolution as part of the reasoning for going in. If it was up to the UN, they would have passed another and another resolution till the sky fell and nothing would have been done.

I am sorry, but the UN is a useless body.

The world is ending… We’re in agreement again…

I don’t like the UN - I like the misuse of it less - but this time they get a brownie… Or maybe a wedgie… This was unwontedly ballsey for them.

Still, I’ll be uncharacteristic and suggest a silver lining. Back when this hit, I read an op-ed by By Ashton B. Carter and William J. Perry, former Clinton Administration wonks. The title, "If necessary, Strike & Destroy: North Korea Cannot Be Allowed to Test This Missile"
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/21/AR2006062101518.html?nav=hcmodule
said it all. The argument was they would gain way too much information even from a failure to allow this to happen. As it turned out, it was such a dismal failure the ylikely learne nothing, and the rest of the world learned they are a bunch of monkeys playing with fire…

They were humiliated. This missile might be good for 2500 miles if they could get it to not cartwheel, and it can carry about 500K [1100 lb]… So that puts them about on par with the Germans… in 1945… The V-2 didn’t have the range, but it did have the payload, and it didn’t cartwheel… They fixeded that in ‘43…

Maybe that’s a silly  comparison, but the fact is these monkeys aren’t very far up the ICBM evolutionary tree… And now they proved it again. In the process, they gained enough animosity that even the Chinese - remember the Chinese, who rescued North Korea in the Korean war, which we pursued for the UN - even the Chinese voted to demand the end of the tests.

All in all, this could have come out a lot worse.

    I Disagree.

The world is not ending, but this will get much worse before getting better.

Do not count NK out of the game, obviously they have sufficient missle technology to be sending missles to Iran at this time.

Missle tests are just that, a test. Find the problems, fix them and then try again.
That is why they thumbed their noses at the UN, first because whther it was ballsey or not, the UN is a waste of time and effort. They have no enforcement besides the US.

NK thumbed their noses at the UN because they plan to continue to test till they get it right, and essentially said that in their statement.

So what do you think with a unanimous effort of the UN, what they will do?
Sanctions? NK already said that will be an act of war.
    Iran said the same thing.
Notice a unique comparison of scaring the UN with tough talk if they even think of trying to grow a pair?

The UN is a worthless body.
They may have been useful at one time, but they are trying to seem important when now they are nothing more than a bunch of windbags wasting our time.
