Major milestone in Iraq goes virtually unnoticed as media engages in docudrama frenzy
It’s truly ironic that a major landmark in Iraq is nearly forgotten as the media and blogosphere is so heavily focused on the ABC docudrama about 9/11 that only a few people notice.
I am sure they will catch up later. Meanwhile here is the story from MSNBC:
Iraq takes military reins from coalition
Coalition forces handed over control of Iraq’s armed forces command to the government Thursday, a move that U.S. officials have hailed as a crucial milestone on the country’s difficult road to independence.
The prime minister takes control of Iraq’s small naval and air forces and the 8th Iraqi Army Division.
While its relevence may seem slight, this is a huge step forward in Iraqi autonomy.
“From today forward, the Iraqi military responsibilities will be increasingly conceived and led by Iraqis,” said Gen. George Casey, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, at a ceremony.
The overall impact remains to be seen, but this is still an important step, and helps bring the US one step closer to leaving.
More later as this develops, but in my opinion, this deserves more coverage then Bill Clintons bruised ego.
