Out of the mouths of babes: Huck Finn, racism and my daughter

Published by Karl under Uncategorized

Bumping this back to the top.

Note to all:  My daughter is sincerely gratified and slightly overwhelmed at all the positive sentiments expressed here.  This blog and her poem has found its way into numerous forums and blogs, and she wishes to say thank you to everyone.

My daughter had an unsettling experience today.  Her class is preparing to read Huck Finn, the Mark Twain classic.

As is common these days, the subject of its racially offensive elements came up, in her case in the form of a PBS Documentary involving efforts in other places to remove the book as racist.

It may have been one of these:

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/cultureshock/teachers/huck/section1_1.html

(it was the second one)

They need not have looked so far, Renton Schools dealt with this in 2003.

Well my daughter is a very open minded, and sensible girl.  In the discussion she stated that she felt the protests went too far, and that the book should be read because it contains our history and the reality of what slavery was, and that "we should look in the eye and face it".  That only by facing it can we make sure we don’t repeat it.  I agree.

The response from her peers was shock.  One girl of mixed race noted "Well that’s because you are white" implying the famous "it’s a black thing, you wouldn’t understand" defense.

My daughter was called a racist because she wants to look racism in the eye and denounce it.

Huck Finn is offensive, but not because of the "N" word.  It is offensive because slavery is offensive as a moral concept.  It deals with it openly using the ignorance of the day to show how ignorant and wrong it was.

The irony was that Twain was intending to satirize racism, not induldge it, as anyone who has studied the book should know.

But what is the book really about? It’s about nothing less than freedom and the quest for freedom. It’s about a slave who breaks the law and risks his life to win his freedom and be reunited with his family, and a white boy who becomes his friend and helps him escape.

Michelle Manhart taken off active status after nude Playboy spread

Published by Karl under Idiots, Military

pb1.jpgThe story here is another one I didn’t get around to blogging fully on, but it is one I do take seriously.

Michelle Manhart is an Air Force Technical Instructor or TI (the Air Force does not have Drill Sergeants) at Lackland AFB.  Lackland is the only base the Air Force uses for Basic Military Training.

Late last year she decided to pose nude for Playboy.  Were that not enough, she appeared in the pictorial in full uniform yelling at "trainees" (click the thumbnail for a ‘G’ rated clipVia Hot Air:

An Air Force staff sergeant who posed nude for Playboy magazine has been relieved of her duties while the military investigates, officials said Thursday.

In February’s issue, hitting newsstands this week, Michelle Manhart is photographed in uniform yelling and holding weapons under the headline “Tough Love.” The following pages show her partially clothed, wearing her dog tags while working out, as well as completely nude.

“This staff sergeant’s alleged action does not meet the high standards we expect of our airmen, nor does it comply with the Air Force’s core values of integrity, service before self, and excellence in all we do,” Oscar Balladares, spokesman for Lackland Air Force Base, said in a statement.

Now had she been a mechanic at some base in Arkansas likely the row would never have happened.  The critical reason that this was a bad idea was that she was a TI.  As a TI she holds a unique position that is one of no compromise in standards and conflicts.  And the fact is that most trainees are still men, and nude pictures of their Instructor pose a problem to discipline.

Rob at Sayanything gets it:

Usually I have no problem with girls wanting to strip down for magazines like Playboy, but when the girl in question is currently employed as an officer representing our country in the military there’s a bit of a problem.  I can imagine that the troops she’s charged with leading may have a problem taking her seriously once they get a load of her nude in Playboy.
