Bloggers to CPAC: Dump Ann - LSU to Bloggers: Why I won’t sign

Published by Karl at 11:04 pm under ann coulter

Whenever I see a post on Memeorandum, and I see equal numbers of liberal and conservative bloggers referenced, I get nervous.  Seeing such unity should be a good thing, but while I trust the motives of many conservatives to be at least marginally altruistic, I do not trust the likes of HuffPo or Wonkette to be anything of the sort, and if they team up with conservatives, it is because they see a way to slap the conservatives down.

Such is the case of Ann Coulter.  Leaving the content of her remarks aside, and if you are curious, I blogged my thoughts several times previously, the big issue now is what to do about what she said.

As she spoke only for herself, I have no need to do anything but blog and behave in a manner that represents my true values.  Neither does any other blogger on the face of the earth, including Ann.

And I appreciate how so many conservatives took time to condemn her remarks.  But it should end there, end with her rebuke by her peers.  Instead the conservatives are planning a boycott of Ann from speaking at the next CPAC:

CPAC sponsors, the Age of Ann has passed. We, the undersigned, request that CPAC speaking invitations no longer be extended to Ann Coulter. Her words and attitude simply do too much damage.

I will not sign it.  Nor will I link to it beyond this quote.  Why?

Because they are doing it for the wrong reasons.

If you feel offended by her remarks, and think they were wrong, stand up and say so.  Deal with it on the merits of it.  Speak against it and move on.

Instead we are seeing it being condemned , not solely for its moral qualities, for the right and wrong of it, but for the impact on all conservatives, for the damaged to CPAC and to conservatism.

And in that, my conservative friends, is pandering to the left and giving them a win.

By accepting that accusation and its accompanying damage, by allowing the left to apply a single persons ill times remark to all conservatives, you acknowledge the complaint and essentially accept it, even if you do so unknowingly.

In your condemnation and call for a boycott, the left uses it against you.  Read the latest on HuffPo.  They are using this as further proof that all conservatives are bigoted loons, and claim we are just covering out tracks.

Ann speaks for Ann.  If she offends that is all the reason in the world to shun her.  Let her take the heat for her own remarks.  Personal responsibility, remember?

Deal with what she said based solely on its merits.  And make no mistake, if you decided for that reason alone to ask her not to speak, you are totally justified.

But by taking the stance you have, with the reasons stated, you have shifted the debate away from right and wrong and made it a matter of expediency and that is a liberal tactic, not one of conservative values.

This has nothing to do with my support or condemnation of Ann, it has to do with dealing with it on its merits, not on what gain you can draw from it.  In short I see this as damage control, that is causing more damage then it controls.

Fall back to conservative values, and trust those values.  Address the petition as a matter of value and offense, not damage control.

Bearing those reasons in mind, LSU reluctantly declines to sign on to the petition, as written.

Take out the self serving aspects damage control aspects of it, and make a stance on the morality of it, and I will gladly reconsider.  It’s a matter of principle.   I hold no grudge against my friends who support this.  I just respectfully disagree.

What Ann said went over the top. That’s not unusual. She’s well known for pushing the edge and for throwing a few bombs.

Those on the left that hate her don’t need the new ammunition, but I’m sure they’re happy to have it. Those on the right that want to throw her to the wolves seem to me to be pretty much the same as those on the left that throw the same kind of bombs.

I don’t excuse or condone what Ann said. She was wrong to say it. That doesn’t change the fact that she’s been right about a great many issues.

Conservative values aren’t based upon the cult of personality, they’re based on time tested truths. Conservatism, true conservatism that is, won’t be damaged by the occasional gaffe made by a pundit.

Since my own circle refers to Edwards as ‘the Breck girl’, I cannot throw a brick from my own glass house. My term would probably have gotten the same reaction as Arnold’s ‘girly men’ did - but Ann’s is much too politically incorrect to pass without agenda-driven condemnation. If Ann appears at any local forum in my area, I will be there to applaud.
By the way, where is the univeral condemnation of that fool Maher claiming that if Cheney were dead, others would live? I am deafened by the silence.

Well CPAC can do what they want. (I thought tar and feathers were out of style. Guess not). Good thing Ann looks great in black. Consider this: if Jonathan Swift were writing today he’d be calling for Irish “baby burgers” to be added to the menu at McDonalds. Isn’t Ann tame in comparison?

  20. [...] Signing some self defeating statement banning Ann Coulter will do nothing to change that. Conservatives need to defend Ann Coulter because what she said is being misconstrued and maliciously manhandled by the media to block out all the positive messages that happened at CPAC.  I know most of you blame her for uttering the word, since we can never expect the media to think beyond “faggot.”  But Ann Coulter is not the story, nor is the word she said.  The story is the political double standard that hounds Republicans and excuses Democrats.  It is happening once again, and many have chosen to sing along instead of demand accountability.
