Immigration Round Up

Published by Karl at 11:54 pm under Illegal immigration, OTA

So many stories, so little bandwidth.  Here are the highlights.

Sen. Harry Reid calls the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants “12 million undocumented Americans” in the video embedded prominently on the front page of his web site right now. Giving the video that position removes the possibility that Reid merely misspoke. It’s what he meant to say.

Which means that he’s far, far out in front on the amnesty gambit. He already thinks of anyone who gets here by hook or by crook as an American, a citizen.

Nice.  Go to the link at Hot Air for the video if you don’t believe it.  Reid had it embedded on his official Senate website, though it is gone now.  Someone however was smart enough to save it.

A broad immigration bill to legalize millions of people in the U.S. unlawfully failed a crucial test vote in the Senate Thursday, a stunning setback that could spell its defeat for the year.

The vote was 45-50 against limiting debate on the bill, 15 short of the 60 that the bill’s supporters needed to prevail. Most Republicans voted to block Democrats’ efforts to bring the bill to a final vote.

The legislation, which had been endorsed by President Bush, would tighten borders, institute a new system to prevent employers from hiring undocumented workers in addition to giving up to 12 million illegal immigrants a pathway to legal status.

The bill, dubbed by many “shamnesty”, was very unpopular, and apparently the law makers have had second thoughts.   Not saying they will not do some back room dealing and shove it down our throats, but for now the bill is in limbo.  Hopefully they will try again and do a better job.

 Adam,

Please consider this my resignation as Aiken County chair for McCain. I am too far from him on the Amnesty Bill. I was hopeful that he could keep his nose clean this time around, but he can’t read the pulse of the American citizens.

Please pass my regrets on to Henry McMaster.

 Interesting.

It’s like the Yankees calling in Mariano Rivera to close the World Series: Microsoft CEO Steven A. Ballmer huddled today with Sen. Jon Kyl, hoping to convince the Arizona Republican, a key negotiator of the immigration bill, to soften restrictions on high-tech industry hiring.

The 30-minute meeting in a Senate “hideaway” office came amid rising threats from industry groups that they would withhold support for the bill, citing a lack of flexibility in recruiting foreign workers. They have been pushing an amendment from Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) making it easier for companies to secure visas and green cards for high-skilled workers – a proposal that Kyl and another negotiator, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), have called a deal breaker.

This does illustrate one often overlooked issue.  While the illegals coming in unabated is a serious issue, another aspect of immigration is the difficulty in getting qualified people sponsored in legally.

I could post more, but the point I really want to make is made:  There are many levels to the debate around immigration and we need to be aware of all aspects of it.

And we need more reasoned debate on the real issues, and less debate on the faux issues.
