Is Diversity only skin deep?
In Seattle, it appears to be the case. All of the emphasis on diversity seems to hinge on racial integration. The problem is that true diversity is so much more then just race. I’ll get back to that in a moment.
The story in Seattle was about the use of race as a tie breaker in the open admissions policy. When a number of students all wanted to attend a particular school, and there were too many equally qualified applicants, their race was used to determine those admitted, with he goal being to balance the school to a racially diverse population.
Seattle Schools has a long history of this absurd obsession with racial diversity. See these posts:
Why absurd? Consider this report that indicates the futility of these programs.
For an even better look see this sound politics article: Caprice Hollins needs to go
The story continues as the SCOTUS ruled last week that the use of race has to stop (to be fair, the policy was suspended pending the court case).
High court rejects school integration plans
The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected the Seattle school district’s racial tiebreaker, along with a school-integration plan in Kentucky, but left the door open for the limited use of race to achieve diversity in schools.
The reactions have been utterly ridiculous. They are in full panic demagogue mode. Consider this bit from Speaker Pelosi.
Supreme Court School Decision a Retreat From Our Nation’s Commitment to Opportunity and Equality
I am extremely disappointed in the Supreme Court’s decision overriding the efforts of local communities to grapple with the complex issue of diversity in our schools. This decision is a retreat from our nation’s commitment to opportunity and equality in our schools and a retreat from the fundamental values of our country.
So by stopping racial preference, it is a “retreat from our nation’s commitment to opportunity and equality in our schools and a retreat from the fundamental values of our country”. Fool. Someone show Speaker Pelosi what equal means in the dictionary.
Seattle integration plan struck down
In conservative la-la land, attempts to counteract discrimination are themselves a form of discrimination.
Lovely. This fool forgets that the lawsuit was an attempt to counteract discrimination in a policy the used discrimination to counteract the effects of discriminatory discrimination in…oh never mind.
Here are some more form Newsbusters.

The decision in cases affecting schools in Louisville, Ky., and Seattle could imperil similar plans in hundreds of districts nationwide, and it leaves public school systems with a limited arsenal to maintain racial diversity. -

The dramatic 5-4 decision throws into legal doubt programs that consider race, including magnet schools that use race to draw students from different neighborhoods. The ruling is likely to spawn litigation nationwide. -

Supreme Court strikes down school integration policies (LA Times)
Oh, and the Detroit Free Press goes with this gem: “Supreme Court rules race cannot determine school choice.”
Two things: Hasn’t that been the law of the land since Brown v. Board of Education, and, since when is it school “choice” when its a government body that selects for you where you MUST attend school?
Read them if you want but the prime idiot award goes to local Seattle Hothead Goldy at HorsesAss:
Since dropping its racial tiebreaker in the face of a lawsuit by parents, Seattle’s high schools have grown dramatically less integrated. And now that the U.S. Supreme Court has issued a sweeping, 5-4 decision ruling Seattle’s racial tiebreaker unconstitutional, school districts across the nation will swiftly re-segregate.
Indeed, but for some caveats in Justice Anthony Kennedy’s concurring opinion, the Roberts Court has all but overturned the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision that led to desegregation throughout the South and the rest of the nation. Writing in dissent, Justice Stephen Breyer warns that this is a decision we will all regret.
What bullshit.
But the point that everyone of these articles, stories and blogs misses is that diversity is not just about race. I got a shocking idea for you here, but there are far more important elements that encompass diversity then just race.
I’ll say it again: There are far more important elements that encompasses diversity then just race.
You can pack a school full of Asians, blacks Hispanics and all that but it still may not do all it can for diversity. Can you assure that your Asian population is the proper mix of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese and all the other subsets? Will the Middle Easterners encompass all the varieties there? Heck will the blacks have the blend of cross cultures?
And that ignores the fact that there is considerable diversity in the White population. Each year I see more and more efforts to celebrate diversity from every continent or land mass except Europe.
Do the Norwegians get a vote? The Italians? How about the English and the Scots?
The racial quota types assume that anyone with white kin is the same and pass them by, as if we are some mindless pale Paris Hilton clone.
Try this. Pick a 100 people at random. A 100 White people that is. Will all of them be like Brad Pitt or Julia Roberts?
Hardly. They will be a mixture of Catholic, Christian, Orthodox, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, Wiccans and all manner of other faiths, as well as agnostics and atheists.
Some will have roots extending to the Mayflower, other through Ellis Island and still other only in their first or second generations as Americans and all points in between.
Some will be veterans, some will be Anti War. Some may have their heredity from Europe, some from Australia, some Slavic states.
Some will be rich, some poor and most in the middle class some where in between.
A few will be homeless.
And in the case of ideology and values, no two will be the same.
Is there no diversity in there that can add value to our society? I am tired of being treated as if my race is a burden on society when I have done nothing to deserve it.
And in the case of Seattle Schools they don’t give a rat’s ass about all the varied diverse elements that make up a society. All they want is the correct balance of skin colors based on some intangible formula.
Diversity should be economic, social, ideological, religious, cultural and yes racial. It should be a componant yes, but not the primary factor. The only reason it is such a high priority is because it shows a visible tangible result, even if the reality is that the result has no credible value (see the story above). But it sure looks good doen’t it?
It’s all about appearance, because in Seattle, Diversity is just skin deep.
And that is racism at its worst.

The only way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race.
That’s not an exact quote, but it’s the meat of the decision. Anyone that thinks that you can end racial discrimination by discriminating on the basis of race is either a fool, or a double-thinking kool-ade drinker.
For saying this several months ago I was called a racist. Now it appears that the left thinks that Chief Justice John Roberts is a racist too.
Yep. They have been hinting just that for a long time.
The racism on the left is as bad as everything they accuse the right of.
And I particularly love the hubris of people like Pelosi.
