The Goracle’s bad day part 1- An Inconvenient Concert

Published by Karl at 12:51 am under Global Warming, OTA, hollywierd, hypocrites

The Live Earth concerts are being hailed as one of the events of our lifetime, but while Gore is basking in the adoration of the eco-nazis Global Warming Alarmists, he faces some serious complaints and criticisms.

Some question Live Earth's ‘green’ credentials - Congressman, Roger Daltry of The Who are among concert critics

Live Earth organizers have gone to considerable lengths to marry the global event’s methods with its message, but they’ve been called hypocrites by critics as varied as a Congressman and one of the Who.

“The last thing the planet needs is a rock concert,” Who lead singer Roger Daltrey recently told a British newspaper.

Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla. (who has called global warming a “hoax”), earlier in a posting on the Web site for the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works called on Hollywood global warming activists “who talk the talk, to walk the walk.”

“This is going to be the greenest event of its kind, ever,” former Vice President and Live Earth partner Al Gore told The Associated Press. “The carbon offsets and the innovative practices that are being used to make this a green event, I think, will set the standard for years to come.”

Still, some — like Muse frontman Matthew Bellamy — have criticized the use of private jets for artists. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has also claimed it is inconsistent with the message of Live Earth to host meat-selling vendors at the concerts.

Others have voiced skepticism that carbon-neutral efforts don’t absolve pollution. (The concept of carbon neutral is to offset carbon dioxide emissions with the help of companies that cancel out carbons in some way, such as by planting trees.)

Think of it as a CO2 shell game.  And considering how many millions Gore makes off of Carbon offsets, it is very self serving.

The verbal slappings continue, this time from a very realistic young rock band:

Concert leaves Monkeys cold

British rock group Arctic Monkeys have become the latest music industry stars to question whether the performers taking part in Live Earth on Saturday are suitable climate change activists.

"It's a bit patronising for us 21 year olds to try to start to change the world," said Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders, explaining why the group is not on the bill at any of Al Gore's charity concerts.

"Especially when we're using enough power for 10 houses just for (stage) lighting. It'd be a bit hypocritical," he said in an interview before a concert in Paris.

"Someone asked us to give a quote about what was happening in Sheffield and it's like 'who cares what we think about what's happening'?" added Helders.

"There's more important people who can have an opinion. Why does it make us have an opinion because we're in a band?"

That is so very true.  The average rock star is all about a cause and publicity, but lacking in scientific know how and common sense.

They are not the only stars to take a cynical view of Live Earth, which aims to raise awareness about global warming but which will require many long-haul flights and thousands of car journeys to and from the music venues.

Many of the biggest acts have questionable environmental credentials - the car-loving rapper Snoop Dogg appeared in a Chrysler commercial last year - and there are doubts about the ability of pop stars to galvanise the world into action.

Bob Geldof, the architect of Live Aid and Live 8, the two biggest awareness-raising concerts in history, had a public spat with Al Gore about the need for the event.

"Why is he (Gore) actually organising them?" Geldof said in an interview with a Dutch newspaper in May, adding that everyone was already aware of global warming and the event needed firm commitments from politicians and polluters.

And the singer from 80s pop sensations The Pet Shop Boys, Neil Tennant, attacked the arrogance of pop stars who put themselves forward as role-models.

"I've always been against the idea of rock stars lecturing people as if they know something the rest of us don't," he was reported as saying by British music magazine NME.

Yup.

Stamping its footprint

Ever since Al Gore began promoting Live Earth, an eco-event featuring nine simultaneous rock concerts at venues around the world, including Sydney, the critics have been lining up to tip a bucket on the idea.

Then came the lead singer of the Who, Roger Daltrey, declaring the "last thing the planet needs is a rock concert". And, closer to home, a Fairfax journalist in Melbourne, Michelle Griffin, dubbed Live Earth "a gross indulgence".

"It's just a green rubber bracelet to string on your arm next to the white rubber band that will magically make poverty history, and the yellow one that cures cancer," she wrote.

None of this comes as any surprise to Michael Molitor, the man charged with making Saturday's Sydney event as carbon-neutral as possible. But, he says, the critics have simply got it wrong. He argues that Live Earth is about persuading people to act rather than merely raising awareness.

He claims the concerts are not as bad as people complain, but that is ludicrous.

The solution to the huge footprint of trucks and planes and electricity?  Carbon Credits, also known as money in Gore's pocket.  But this rationalization is beautiful.

"Someone said to me, 'Wow, an event like this must be a super carbon emitter,"' he says, "But actually it's not. If those people were living in caves and not moving or doing anything then yes, it would be a super carbon [hungry] event, but the question you have to ask is what would those people be doing on a Saturday if they weren't going to Live Earth? There is not a tremendous amount of difference between the carbon footprint of those people going to Live Earth and if they were staying at home

So the logic is "you would have polluted anyway, so it's ok.

Such is the logic of the eco-nazis:  Pollution is bad unless you are polluting when we say it's ok.

And a final note.  What is sad is how many people in Britain and Down Under see right through this farce, but how so few in America seem to.
