The Jena 6
I don't typically jump on bandwagons. The problem is that there are too many scams, frauds, hoaxes and selfish causes. And when you get into racial issues, the liberal race bait so much that it is easy to be skeptical.
But sometimes there are issues that are clearly unjust and deserve some attention. This one is shaping up to be one of those.
The basic issue is a small town in Louisiana where "stealth racism" seems to be the rule. I would have, in my normal cynicism, expected this to be a Sharpton style ruse, but the more I read the more concerned I get.
At the center are 6 boys, all black, who were charged with attempted 2nd degree murder. One has gone to trial and was convicted, but his charge was reduced to aggravated battery. He faces 22 years in jail.
What makes this shaky is that his charge requires a deadly weapon. His weapon: Tennis Shoes. He was also convicted by an all white jury, and his public defender called no witnesses in his defense.
At the least this seems like a miscarriage of justice, and the economic status of the kid might have been the biggest factor, except there is a history racism in the town and a series of racially charged incidents.

I also will post an article from the Seattle PI that I read today that makes a compelling case.
I don't see eye to eye with the PI, it's liberal bias is well known, but I have to say that if this article is accurate, this stinks.
No one can seriously argue that racism in America is dead. We all know that it exists. What has changed is that most Americans find it unacceptable and want it exposed and defeated.
I think the allegations made in this story more then justify intervention and investigation.
LSU recommends that all readers contact the Governor's office immediately and ask her to investigate and act on this. If nothing is found, and the boys are just hoodlums (as one website insists) then fine, a fair investigation should validate that. It would be better to prove it then assume it. The risk of not investigating this is too severe not to take those steps. We claim we are above this, lets prove it.

It's still about race in Jena, La
Last week in Detroit, the NAACP held a mock funeral for the N-word. But a chilling case in Louisiana shows us how far we have to go to bury racism. This story begins in the small, central Louisiana town of Jena. Last September, a black high school student requested the school's permission to sit beneath a broad, leafy tree in the hot schoolyard. Until then, only white students sat there.
The next morning, three nooses were hanging from the tree. The black students responded en masse. Justin Purvis, the kid who first sat under the tree, told filmmaker Jacquie Soohen: "They said, 'Y'all want to go stand under the tree?' We said, 'Yeah.' They said, 'If you go, I'll go. If you go, I'll go.' One person went, the next person went, everybody else just went."
Then the police and the district attorney showed up. Substitute teacher Michelle Rogers recounts: "District Attorney Reed Walters proceeded to tell those kids that 'I could end your lives with the stroke of a pen.' "
It wouldn't happen for a few more months, but that is exactly what the district attorney is trying to do.
Jena, a community of 4,000, is about 85 percent white. While the black community gathered at a church to respond, others didn't see the significance. Soohen interviewed Jena town librarian Barbara Murphy, who reflected: "The nooses? I don't even know why they were there, what they were supposed to mean. There's pranks all the time, of one type or another, going on. And it just didn't seem to be racist to me." Tensions rose.
Robert Bailey, a black student, was beaten up at a white party. Then, a few nights later, Robert and two others were threatened by a white man with a sawed-off shotgun, at a convenience store. They wrestled the gun away and fled. Robert's mother, Caseptla Bailey, said: "I know they were in fear of their lives. They were afraid that this man was going to shoot them, you know, especially in the back, running away from the scene."
The next day, Dec. 4, 2006, a fight broke out at the school. A white student was injured, taken to the hospital and released. Robert Bailey and five other black students were charged ... with second-degree attempted murder. They each faced 100 years in prison. The black community was reeling.
Independent journalist Jordan Flaherty was the first to break the story nationally. He explained: "I'm sure it was a serious fight, and I'm sure it deserved real discipline within the school system, but he (the white student) was out later that day. He was smiling. He was with friends ... it was a serious school problem that came on the heels of a long series of other events ... as soon as black students were involved, that's when the hammer came down."
The African American community began to call them the Jena Six. The first to be tried was Mychal Bell, 17 years old and a talented football player, looking forward to a university scholarship. Bell was offered a plea deal, but refused. His father, Marcus Jones, took a few minutes off from work to talk to me: "Here in LaSalle Parish, whenever a black man is offered a plea bargain, he is innocent. That's a dead giveaway here in the South."
Right before the trial, the charges of attempted second-degree murder were lowered to aggravated battery, which under Louisiana law requires a dangerous weapon. The weapon? Tennis shoes.
Mychal Bell was convicted by an all-white jury. His court-appointed defense attorney called no witnesses. Bell will be sentenced on July 31, facing a possible 22 years. The remaining five teens, several of whom were jailed for months, unable to make bail, still face attempted second-degree murder charges and a hundred years each in prison.
Flaherty, who grew up in New Orleans, sums up the case of the Jena Six: "I don't think there is anyone around that would doubt that if this had been a fight between black students or a fight of white students beating up a black student, you would never be seeing this. It's completely about race. It's completely about two systems of justice."
Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco gained national prominence during Hurricane Katrina. There's another hurricane that's devastating the lives of her constituents: racism. The families of the Jena Six are asking her to intervene. The district attorney says he can end the boys' lives with his pen. But Blanco's pen is mightier. She should wield it, now, for justice for the Jena Six.

An Open Letter To The Jena Six

Dear Mychal,
I keep thinking about you. I also think about the other young men who have fallen prey to racial hatred. Its existence, more than a century after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, makes me fearful for your life, your safety. The freedom that it promised was tenuous.
It was not entirely without strength. In the proclamation, issued three years into the Civil War, Lincoln declared, at the urging of Frederick Douglass, that the former slaves would be accepted into the Union Army and navy, making the liberated the liberator. By the war’s end, almost 200,000 black servicemen had fought for freedom and saved the Union.
Your generation, like mine, is being denied this freedom our ancestors risked life and limb, so that we may live as free men and women. You can call them heroes, but they were not thinking of themselves when they displayed courage and self-sacrifice on the battlefields of America.
Today, then, to guard against the impending doom of American civilization, is not only opposition to racism, but also the determination to secure the civil rights for which many Americans have paid a heavy toll. Of all the civil rights, the right to learn is the surest prevention from ignorance. If at any time, children are instructed with anti-black bias; and they are made to learn what is not true and what the dominate forces in their lives want them to think is true; there’re guilty of impeding the march toward American civilization.
Astonishing as it is that those students would hang three nooses from the tree at Jena High School as a racial taunt, including calling the black students ‘niggers’; you would think that America would never again want to see a black person hang from a tree, or behind bars. The nooses show that we, Americans, have not come that far from the cruelties and barbarity of slavery as we think. (Between 1882 and 1968, an estimated 5,000 people, mostly blacks, met their deaths at the hands of lynch mobs.) And this also is an unfortunate comment upon the belief that our schools are the great path to progress, the great equalizer. If our schools are the great path to progress, they must be the freest of our institutions, opposed bitterly to the attempt to indoctrinate our children with racial hatred.
Well, Mychal, as you and the others wait behind bars because of a racially biased and an over zealous prosecutor, it is for us on the outside to continue the unfinished work of our fathers, to set you free. All of you were willing to fight racial hatred, and you know people of goodwill are beside you. If the Confederacy couldn’t stop us, the opposition we now face will fail. When history is written your detractors will get little note, but you will be remembered for standing up for what’s best of the American creed. You are part of a legacy in which our slave forebears fought to birth a new nation. You, Mychal, are a child of America’s destiny.
It was Martin Luther King who said if a man doesn’t have something worth dying for he is not fit to live. Freedom is worth dying for. Justice is worth dying for. Equality is worth dying for. A child is worth dying for, because our job as parents is to protect children.
Mychal, when you feel complete frustration and your narrow jail cell is closing in on your spirit and mind; remember the message of the old slave preacher to his flock whose resistance to oppression might have been completely in vain:
“You are created in God’s image. You are not slaves, you are not ‘niggers’; you are God’s children.”

I don’t think anyone is condoning ANYONE being attacked. However there is a large piece of this story that is missing. Days after the nooses were hung from the tree several white students “ganged up” and jumped on black students and they too were injured and NOTHING was said or done. But then when it’s reversed the black students are charged with attemted murder? Tell me where’s the justice and equality? NO one should have been jumped on. But how is it that the white students weren’t even punished, no suspension or anything and the black students are charged with attempted murder? You’ve got to be kidding me! I was never a fighter, but even as a female I did get into an altercation or two that did turn physical. I guess I can only thank God that I was only placed in detention and suspended from school once and not given a 22 year prison sentence.
Speaking to everyone who has voiced his or her concerns in regards to Jena 6.
My mind is constantly wondering and my thoughts have been cloudy for years in regards to racism and discrimination. You see I still have not fully grasped nor do I understand how any “man” could enslave another “man.” I don’t understand how “we” as a race of people can identify with a higher being “God” yet have a heart filled with hatred. Who do we serve? Today’s society is shaped by our ideas, knowledge, experiences, morales, etc., people of color are not trying to relive nor desire to revisit history. Unfortunately, some of White America never let go of the history that was created by their forefathers. This is sad!
We talk about a justice system but that system has been flawed for centuries. Not only for Black America but for mankind period. When white mothers can kill their innocent children, blame a black face just to avoid shame,and then serve minimal jail time if any - what type of justice do we call that? When white women (teachers) can have sexual relationships with their students (black or white) and the exception is given to some based on upper class status - what type of justice is this? When white men rape, commit incest, and torture little boys and girls (black or white), some are given harsh sentences but others (e.g., priest, principles, politicians) receive a slap on the wrist - what kind of system would do such? All of these are examples based on how the justice system responds to White America but when it responds to Black America - you best believe that regardless of the crime he or she will do the time.
This exist today! I now understand why other countries despise and resent the United States. How can we win a war when we’re still in battle against racism, prejudiceness, and discrimination. Women and men (black and white) serving this country and dying on the battle field in Iraq - for what? I understand why the fire burns continously for the people in Iraq, Africa, Sudan, Korea, China, etc., these people would rather die defending their country, to remain detached from our “democracy.” What democracy? The United States is trapped within itself and until it releases hatred, racism, prejudiceness, and discrimination - acts such as Jena 6 will continue to exist and equality will continue to disintegrate.
This is our opportunity as a race of people to unite and denounce what is taking place in Jena Louisiana. Because if we fail to do “anything” - history will not be repeated because people in today’s society will not “stand” for enslavement. This will lead to nothing but chaos. Other rural towns will mimic this incident and the cycle will continue until the justice system has been liberated for “all” of mankind.
What day, week, month, year, decade or century will this happen?

Was the OJ trial justice? Did the truck driver with the fractured skull after the Denny trial receive justice? I find it interesting that you mention the nooses were painted in school colors and were apparantly intended on “supporting” a football theme of “Hang the Cowboys” - a rival town’s team coming in for a visiting game.

And apparantly no protests until early September when two black on white racial fights led a black religious-community activist group to claim it was “those nooses”. Which led to a full police and FBI “hate crime” investigation which found there was none.
Althouse is right. The reporting, like in the Duke case, has been very poor.
And expanding, it is the media again trying to force a story into it’s patented “racial suffering of blacks and their justified outrage” metanarrative . Again willfully ignoring the facts of the case available to any reporter they dared send with an open mind to interview people. Which none of them did, as with the Duke case.
The media and black leaders tried to argue its still the 1920s in the Deep South, whites are terrorizing “innocent blacks”, and lynchings haunt the landscape.
In fact, in most American’s lifetimes, it is not blacks who are the hunted. They are the hunters. In the “Color of Crime”, a statistical study - A white is 12 times more likely to be murdered by a black than the reverse. A black victimized by an armed non-black robber is 38 times less likely than a white, hispanic, or Asian being held up at gunpoint by a black thug. A white woman who is raped now has a 50-50 chance her attacker was black. Black women have a one in 130 chance their rapist will be a non-black.
But media, the old black leadership, and guilty white liberals prefer instead to pretend that the present reality is one where innocent blacks cower in fear of school lynchings and KKK riding and guns, not the people misusing them, are the problem. Or, desperately feel compelled to prove they are not evil racist whites as they are indoctrinated by seeking in any crime to establish a “moral equivalency” when black thugs are involved. Sure he is a black thug with multiple rapes and assaults and robberies, but he is no worse than the white racist society that forces him to act like that….
School officials are notorious about not publicizing their criminal stats, student on teacher threats or violence, classroom disruptions - but sociologists and educators in conferences and in papers admit that “agressive young black males” are the most daunting problem they face in “diverse schools”.
But with the Jena 6, we have the press, black activists, and guilty whites desperately trying to tie the nooses and “life sentences the noose makers should have gotten” to a racial attack 3 months later that judge, jury, FBI, US Attorney, police investigators determined was not in the thoughts of the 6 black athlete attackers at all.
Another curious bit is a few white Lefties and females in the media who have never been in a fight or know how to fight claiming the stomping was of little consequence because the “attackers were wearing soft white tennis shoes” and “it’s not like the victim was really hurt”. (The victim was told to stay in the hospital overnight, he had a special ceremony he wanted to go to against doctors advice. His family, lacking health insurance, had 12,000 in bills from the neurological care, emergency care, and tests and were concerned about their ability to pay for a hospital bed)
The facts are that military combat instructors say that the “stomp” has 6-7 times more power than a full punch. In hand to hand training or reality, the killing or disabling blows focus in knocking a person down and delivering the final blow to the head, face, or throat. Preferable with a weapon, if none, then a foot, then an elbow, then a knee, and only if the other methods cant be used - a fist or open hand.
And those blows make little difference in the power applied if delivered barefoot, with “soft shoes”, or with hobnailed storm trooper boots. A person who is a lawyer commenting on this remembered his city obtained convictions of 5 blacks who stomped another dug dealer to death in part from sneaker marks on the victims head and face and blood tracks the sneaker soles made leading away
The 6 black athletes had at least 4 members with criminal records for violent crimes. One was convicted of a past arson. One, whose records are sealed, is purportedly convicted of sexual assault on a 12-year old girl when he was younger. But because they were “great athletes” that made for a winning football team, black and white boosters, the local courts, coaches - all tried to ensure they remained in school.
Remember it wasn’t just about the “lack of justice ” for the “innocent 6″, as black and white activists call them, the investigation as to who burned down half the high school continues…and two of the “Jena 6″ are suspects. And investigations as to who was making death threats at the school and phoning the kid and the “3 noose hangers” with similar threats continue. And threats blacks made to other whites at school that if they showed up, they would die (reportedly invoving 2 of the 6 black athletes that a local minister said were allowed to conduct “a reign of terror” against schoolmates…
And one of the Jena 6 not in jail is suspect in 2 other violent assaults, and has convictions for 4 other significant crimes as a juvie.
Finally, the actions of the local DA make a lot more sense if it is true, as implied, that the only way to get a juvie on a violent rampage in the adult system better able to handle him was by overcharging the crime, then dropping charges in his racial attacks down to more sensible charges of aggravated battery, conspiracy to commit battery. The ringleader he wanted, Mychal Bell, was free at the time and school not notified by the juvenile system despite charges of two other violent assaults. And ability to more freely interrogate and prosecute the other 5 thugs in the adult system did offer the potential of ending the racial attacks and arson through intimidation. This was also only one week after one white kid could have been killed in a race-related gang stomping by strong athletes, an incident involving a struggle for a gun betwen a white kid and 2 of the Jena 6, and with half the high school burned and smoking……
I think once the details are fairly presented, the black leaders and local black activists will look like the bigoted assholes they were in the Lacrosse case. The media will again be exposed for pursuing their agenda and approved liberal narrative, not reporting on the facts. The town will be faulted for both enabling the black thugs to keep playing football as well as nailing them more harshly than whites because they had past extensive criminal history. The arson of the HS will continue to be investigated. Guilty white liberals and academics will again have their vapid “white oppressor” denunciations reposted and ridiculed - as with the Lacrosse case and dozens of others - when facts are better known.
