OJ’s tacky book: I’ll take two

Published by Karl at 1:14 am under OTA, hollywierd, justice?

I blogged this not long ago, the tacky book that OJ wrote and the bickering of who gets the money for it if published.  In it I made two observations.

So...let’s suppose OJ does get the book published and the book makes 38 Million+.  Then what?

The Browns and Goldmans get the money.  OJ’s debt would be settled, and the families would be forced to accept that Justice had spoken and the scales were now balanced.

OJ Should fight to get it published on those grounds, just to settle the suit.

And...

But what then? No amount of cash brings back the dead, nor does it change anything. They will never NOT hate him. Fred Goldman particularly strikes me as someone who has sacrificed his own happiness and life for a cage of hate.

He has cause, but he is poisoning himself in the process, and to me it is just more evil to come out of this ugliness.

So the question is, aside from punishing him, which it does not do as he still lives cushy on a $40,000 a month pension, what is the point?

No closure will be had even if he pays every penny. This all just seems pointless now.

I stand by that.

Now, having said that, it looks like my observations were really predictions.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20253683/

A literary agent for the family of stabbing victim Ronald Goldman has made a deal to repackage and publish O.J. Simpson’s canceled “If I Did It” book about the slayings of Goldman and Simpson’s ex-wife, a spokesman for the agent said Monday.

Details of the agreement, including the name of the New York publishing house, will be released Tuesday, said Michael Wright, a spokesman for Los Angeles-based literary agent Sharlene Martin of Martin Literary Management.

I considered several reactions.  Part of me hope it bombs so that all parties will get the message that most of America is bored with this.  No such luck.

I also hoped that they would leave his book alone and publish it as it, and let him be damned or not by his own words,  and I got that wish...to a point:

“The family and publisher have pledged to leave Simpson’s manuscript entirely intact, but they will also add key commentary,” Wright said in a prepared statement.

So they can editorialize on it to ensure that everyone knows he is guilty.  What else could "Key Commentary" be.

I at least hoped that all profits would contribute to paying off his civil judgment.  Maybe, but maybe not.

“The Goldmans, the publisher and Sharlene Martin will all contribute portions of sales proceeds to the Ron Goldman Foundation for Justice.”

So does that money come out of the profits that would go to pay off his debt?

After all, they went to court specifically to ensure that any profits were seized under bankruptcy laws and used to satisfy the Court Order.

And what about the Brown family?

So tell you what I will do.  I will not only buy one, I will buy two.  But please understand the reason why.

I don't care if he did it.  I don't care if he didn't.  I don't care if the book proves it and I don't care if it doesn't.  I don't care about justice, vengeance or greed where this blood money is concerned.

I consider this my penance for my avid rapt attention during the train wreck trials, for being unable to look away from the spectacle of justice it was.

You see America got a taste of how messed up our justice system is.  How a murderer might have walked in part because of inept prosecutors, inconsistent witnesses and incompetent investigators.  How the dream team proved that money can buy justice.

But the real ugly truth is that Americans, for all our claims of enlightenment still love to watch court theater, and how we care more about the drama then we do the victims.

We fall back into our frontier roots and rush out to watch the horse thief get hung, picnic baskets in hand.

The sickest thing is that the trial made people rich.  Not just the lawyers, the jurists and the witnesses, but the analysts, commentators, reporters and more.

But mostly, and I say this in all seriousness, I will buy two copies mostly for the hope that there are enough books sold to pay off the civil suit, and make them all go away.
