Global Warming: Figures don’t lie, but liars can figure…

Published by Karl at 12:23 am under Global Warming, MSM, OTA

One of the biggest problems the GW alarmists have is showing proof of there assertions and theories.  They parade their data, their climate models, their charts and graphs.  The problem is that more and more evidence is surfacing thats fairly convincingly shows that the data is false, misleading, skewed or simply inaccurate.

Sure….sounds like Science to me.

One incredible example is the seeming fraud behind the famous “hockey stick” graph, one of the alarmists favorites graphics.

Global Warming: Orson Scott Card exposes the science fraud behind the Hockey Stick

An intelligence source, working for a government agency. He’s not a spy, he’s an analyst. He uses computers to crunch numbers and at the end of his work, out pops the truth that was hiding in the original data. Let’s call him “Mann.”

The trouble with Mann is, he has an ideology. He knows what he wants his results to be. And the original numbers aren’t giving him that data. So the agency he works for won’t be able to persuade people to fight the war he wants to fight.

He starts with his software. There are certain procedures that are normal and accepted in his line of work. But if he makes just one little mistake, his program does a weird little recursion and if there’s any data at all that shows the pattern he wants it to show, it will be magnified 139 times, so it far overshadows all the other data.

He can run it on random numbers and it gives him the shape he wants. Unfortunately, the real-world numbers aren’t random — they have a very different shape. All the numbers. Even his jimmied program won’t give the results he wants.

All he needs is any data shaped the right way. And so he looks a little farther, and … here it is. It looks, on the surface, like all the other data that he’s been working with. Other researchers working in his field, just glancing at it, will assume it is, too.

But it isn’t. Because the source that gathered this batch of data had some other key information that takes it all away. The numbers don’t mean what they normally mean. In fact, this number set is absolutely false.

It’s a sickening thought that one of the keystone arguments of the GW debate is so utterly steeped in deception.

There is more…much more.

First we saw NASA retracting some faulty data.

Did Media Or NASA Withhold Climate History Data Changes From The Public?

A change in climate history data at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies recently occurred which dramatically alters the debate over global warming. Yet, this transpired with no official announcement from GISS head James Hansen, and went unreported until Steve McIntyre of Climate Audit discovered it Wednesday.

For some background, one of the key tenets of the global warming myth being advanced by Hansen and soon-to-be-Dr. Al Gore is that nine of the ten warmest years in history have occurred since 1995.

McIntyre has been crunching the numbers used to determine such things as published by GISS, and has identified that the data have recently changed such that four of the top ten warmest years in American history occurred in the 1930s, with the warmest now in 1934 instead of the much-publicized 1998.

That they made mistakes is understandable, and no has yet suggested it was intentional.

What strikes me as fairly scary is that there has been little if any recognition by the mainstream media that the numbers were wrong and that some of the core presumptions about temperature trends had been called into question.

Consider that if researchers had uncovered a mistake that made the GW picture worse, the media would have flocked to it like bees to honey.

Then the UN got involved.

UN Climate Panel Accused of Possible Research Fraud

At virtually the same time NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies was correcting historical climate data with the assistance of Climate Audit’s Steve McIntyre, a British mathematician discovered serious flaws in papers used and cited by the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in its most recent Assessment Report.

Douglas J. Keenan, a former Morgan Stanley arbitrageur and current independent mathematical researcher, identified “fabrications” in such studies that suggest a “marked lack of integrity in some important work on global warming that is relied upon by the IPCC” and that “the insignificance of urbanization effects on temperature measurements has not been established as reliably as the IPCC assessment report assumes.”

I had read about this before.  What they are referring to, the urbanization effect, is that not all stations used to record data are reliable due to localized environmental issues.  Things like being surrounded by mass amounts of heat generating concrete makes their data collection inaccurate.  Even worse, in this case, some stations moved and their new locations may have shifted the data.

Meteorological stations sometimes move, and this can affect the temperature measurements of the stations. For example, one of the stations relied upon by the above two papers was originally located on the upwind side of a city and later moved, 25 km, to be on the downwind side of the city. Such a move would be expected to increase the measured temperatures, because a city generates heat. Another station relied upon by the papers was originally located in the center of a city and then moved, 15 km, to be by the shore of a sea. Such a move would be expected to decrease the measured temperatures.

At SurfaceStations.org they are doing a physical survey of as many stations as they can to document the urban biases.  From their website. here are a few oddities:

Sure, very scientific.  Yes they attempt to correct for that, but as the site says:

Yes adjustments have been made to account for measurable and predictable data biases, such as Time of Observation and station moves, but the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) and NASA’s Goddard Institute of Space Flight (GISS) who are the main collectors, analyzers, and modelers of climatic data have not done a site by site hands on photographic survey to account for microsite influences near the thermometer. To date all such studies conducted have been data analysis and data manipulations used to spot and/or minimize data inconsistencies.

So why should I trust any of their predictions, projections or anything else when they don’t even have any scientific level of data purity?

Sister Toldjah provided a lot of good links last week, like these:

This shouldn’t exactly be a surprise, considering the IPCC’s ‘creative’ methodology for the preparation and publication of their reports. From Section 4.2 on “Reports Accepted by Working Groups and Reports prepared by the Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories”:

Changes (other than grammatical or minor editorial changes) made after acceptance by the Working Group or the Panel shall be those necessary to ensure consistency with the Summary for Policymakers or the Overview Chapter.

Interesting, eh? Translation: Anything that doesn’t mesh with the ‘consensus’ view after the ‘acceptance’ of the report by the working group or panel should be changed.

Noel Sheppard also writes about a recent paper composed by the Center for the Study of Carbon Dioxide & Global Change and published by the Science and Public Policy Institute, which indicates that temperatures in Greenland are declining rather than rising, contrary to what the ‘consensus’ says, and that glaciers are expanding rather than melting.

But shhh. Don’t tell any of this to the Goracle and his faithful followers.

There’s a rebellion of sorts going on in the Aussie gov’t over the alleged ‘man made’ link to global warming. The Age.com reports:

Four coalition backbenchers have questioned the link between human activity and global warming, saying Mars, Jupiter, Pluto and Neptune are also warming up.

It seems that after years of steam roller treatment, non concurring scientists are speaking up.  Scientists can be a passionate lot so maybe they don’t like seeing science being subverted to facilitate self serving opportunistic greed.

Global Warming continues to be exposed as a bandwagon political tool.

But the media won’t care.  They won’t expose this without a fight.  You see they love a story that scares you, that makes you watch.  But when the story goes soft and the truth alleviates your fears, they have more important things to cover.
