John Edwards health plan includes compulsory preventative care

Published by Karl at 10:59 pm under Democrats, Idiots, OTA, edwards

You read that right.  His mandatory health plan that will cover everyone also includes mandatory appointments, meaning if you are enrolled, and everyone has to, you MUST go to the doctor according to the plan.

The story comes from Ann Althouse, via Hot Air.

Edwards backs mandatory preventive care

Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards said on Sunday that his universal health care proposal would require that Americans go to the doctor for preventive care.

"It requires that everybody be covered. It requires that everybody get preventive care," he told a crowd sitting in lawn chairs in front of the Cedar County Courthouse. "If you are going to be in the system, you can't choose not to go to  the doctor for 20 years. You have to go in and be checked and make sure that you are OK."

Repeat, with emphasis:

"It requires that everybody be covered. It requires that everybody get preventive care," he told a crowd sitting in lawn chairs in front of the Cedar County Courthouse. "If you are going to be in the system, you can't choose not to go to  the doctor for 20 years. You have to go in and be checked and make sure that you are OK."

This wins the top prize of nanny state government.  Look, I agree that the idea, the concept of a national health care system is attractive.  Having paid outrageous premiums and even gone without health care several times, I think it would be a good thing as a fall back plan.  But this is the first time that I have heard of a catch, that you must do what they tell you.

What might that be?  One obvious one:

He noted, for example, that women would be required to have regular mammograms in an effort to find and treat "the first trace of problem." Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, announced earlier this year that her breast cancer had returned and spread.

While on the surface this sounds proactive, it is also invasive.  And one aspect worries me:

Edwards said his mandatory health care plan would cover preventive, chronic and long-term health care. The plan would include mental health care as well as dental and vision coverage for all Americans.

Would that mean that the state would have the right to force you to receive mental health services?

Ann notes the same thing:

So, the mental health check is mandatory too? Why does he not even realize how bad that sounds? He's so warmed up about the generous benefits he's promising that he doesn't even hear the repressiveness in his own statements. I'm sure he won't be able to deliver on these promises. I'm just wondering about a person with so little sensitivity toward personal freedom.

Ann also notes this:

This idea of screening everyone's mental health reminds me of the proposal we were just talking about to screen military personnel. There was a NYT editorial:

It is an eminently good thing that the anti-suicide measure would require medical specialists to keep track of veterans found to be high risks for suicide. But that’s to care for them as human beings, under that other constitutional right — to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

I'll ignore that goof about the Constitution this time and just quote this reaction of mine:

Why stop at soldiers? Let's have the government come around and check on everyone's sanity and then track those of us who don't meet the standard! To show we care for them as human beings.

That was my sarcasm, but Edwards is talking about really doing it!

Qando notes:

John Edwards says the "right to choose and the right to privacy are fundamental constitutional rights". On the other hand, he also says you're going to go see the doctor when he tells you to see the damned doctor if you know what's good for you

Say Anything continues looking at the scary ramifications of the force aspect:

Imagine, for a moment, that Edwards gets his way and America goes to a national health care system that is funded by all of the taxpayers and requires people who use the system get regular checkups from a doctor to ensure that said taxpayers aren’t laying out cash for people who won’t take care of themselves by going to the doctor.  My question is this: Is Edwards really expecting us to believe that his health care system won’t pay for someone’s cancer treatments simply because they hadn’t been in to the doctor in a couple of years?

If that’s true, how is that any different from the current system where people who refuse to get jobs and secure their own health insurance aren’t given care?

Plus, if Edwards can make doctors visits a prerequisite for getting government-paid-for health care, doesn’t that set the framework for other prerequisites as well?  Like government-monitored exercise regimes and diets?  Sure that sounds absurd and abnormal to us now, but then doesn’t government-mandated doctor’s visits sound sort of absurd and abnormal too?  Where would the health care do-gooding of Edwards and his fellow liberals end?

SA also proved this very pertinent CS Lewis quote:

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

I find it very ironic that for several years we have heard a litany of complaints about Bush and his Admin, mostly because some security measures were too invasive.

How invasive and oppressive is a mandatory health care system that makes itself compulsory?  This is the single most socialistic piece of garbage I have ever read.

So the money question:  Who is it that is trying to take away your choice and your freedom?
