McCain plays the vet card- and pisses me off

Published by Karl at 12:56 am under McCain, election 2008

I am sick of people kissing John McCain's ass.  Period.

I mean that seriously.  People pussy foot around him because of his veterans/pow status, and all that it entails, and I am starting to find it disgusting.

Let me be clear, I am all for respecting his service and his sacrifices.  No one offers more respect to veterans then I do, and his Naval Career was distinguished and his capture and confinement horrifying.

It also ended 34 years ago, and in that intervening time, I am more concerned about how he conducted himself since retiring from the Navy in 1981.  I'm more concerned about his actions as a Senator since 1987.  And he has some Skeletons, most notably being part of the Keating 5.

He also was part of McCain Feingold, which was a waste of time in my opinion as it did nothing substantive to make ethics in campaigns any better.

John Kerry tried this.  John Kerry played on his service his whole presidential campaign.  Now I grant you, the two men have grossly different war records, but the reality is that they are both using their service, and as I was not willing to grant Kerry a pass on his subsequent actions due to his military service, I will not grant that to McCain.

His latest campaign commercial is tear jerker appeal to his strength of character because of his determination to survive the Hanoi Hilton.

I say it is Poo.  Yes. I am admiring of his strength and perseverance, but I care more that immigration strategy is something I cannot support, then I do hearing about his ordeal, and frankly, to watch him invoke pointless emotions over what he endured in Vietnam and not address my criticism as they apply to the present day makes me believe he is afraid of the debate.

I didn't buy it with Murtha, Cleland or Kerry, and I won't buy it with him.

Right now, John does not have my support or my vote, and if he is nominated, I am not even sure I could do a nose hold vote for him- even against Hillary.  I think I'd vote Nader at that point.

John talks a strong talk on a lot of issues but I still see nothing to make me believe he is anything less then a  DC politician with a good sounding platform.  He speaks against pork, but Arizona still gets its share.  Etc ad naseum.  He is a typical politician, and quite honestly I am tired of those.

So advice to John.  Drop the emotional "5 years as a POW, he only weighted 95 lbs but refused to die" appeals.  I'm not buying em and they piss me off because frankly, if you cannot stomach a debate on what you have done lately, and your greatest strength is what you did 30 years ago, why should you be president?

You want my vote?  Show me how good you are now, but more importantly, why you are better then the other clowns you are on stage with.

Here is his newest ad, just to be fair (hat tip Hot Air):

There are those that are blinded by his military service, but you’re right - what happened afterward is what is important. I won’t vote for him either.

    Karl,

Got to agree with you on this one. McCain has some 1A issues with McCain-Feingold and anyone that teams up with the “Swimmer” on anything needs to have his head examined and have their motives questioned. I salute the Senator for his service while in uniform, but like you I have to question his use of that service when it has been 20+ years since he wore that uniform. And to keep the Hildabeast from the White House, I would hold my nose and vote for him.

I will defend his use of this based simply on the fact that there is a rogue element that has ads out saying he was a traitor while at the Hanoi Hilton and part of the literature states that some of the “grunts” probably wouldn’t have minded a cell as opposed to the fighting in the jungle..Ted Sampley can be thanked for that.

That being said, McCain can and should be attacked for his service since his time in the military. We are right to attack him on the issues. I almost think he ran the ad, not so much because people believe he was a traitor during the war, but because he has such an awful Senate record.

    LSU,

I’m sitting here in wonderment. On Fox cable the were just talking about McCain’s new Wage insurance plan? What is that? I must be more tired than I thought. I didn’t get it. I won’t vote for him either. All the canidates were supposed to sign a pleadge about not raising taxes and keeping the tax cuts in place. Not one democrat sighed and neither did McCain or Thompson. I don’t know why Thomason didn’t but again McCain voted with the dems again. He seems to jump in the sack with them to much. I like everyone else know his back ground but some where down the line he has to figure out what he wants to be a repub or a dimwit.
