Making the case for McCain…Just in Case
No, I am not endorsing John. I made one interim endorsement, Thompson. Now I am waiting to see who says what in the lead up to the Washington Caucus. Heck it is really moot as I am not a registered Republican, so I never caucus anyway.
Maybe this year I come off the fence. Maybe I just cast my chips in the general.
But meanwhile, I have to evaluate the 6 viable candidates. Hillary, Obama and Edwards on one hand and Huckabee, Romney and McCain on the other.
On some issues none wow me at all. Immigration? Not a one impresses me. Global warming? None stand against the lying alarmists.
There is only one are where anyone stands apart really, and that is on the war in Iraq.
And strangely, McCain is the only one who I think has the balls to do what must be done. And I am not the only one.
Sister Toldjah ran a story about McCain and what people thought:
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a post asking readers of this blog what they would do if Senator John McCain ended up being the nominee for the party in the presidential race. The responses in the comments section were both passionate and divided. John McCain brings that out in conservatives, because so many conservatives despise McCain, while a not-so-insignificant amount of conservatives like the Arizona Senator.
I think enough people admitted that voting away from him in principle was a possibility that she ran this response:
Here is what I wrote in response to those who indicated they would sit out this election in protest, in an effort to teach the Republican party a lesson:
I, for one, am not going to chance Iraq turning into another Vietnam in order to attempt to teach this country any sort of lesson. If this were in peacetime, it’d be different, but it’s not.
Furthermore, the people doing the most “enduring” would be our troops and their families, both of whom have sacrificed so much for a goal that is achievable if only we are able to set aside our differences with whoever the Republican nominee is in order to make sure what we set out in Iraq to do from the get go has a chance at succeeding. If we don’t, our troops and their families won’t be the only ones “enduring” another Vietnam. The Iraqi people will be enduring it, too - and in a way no innocent person should have to suffer, especially not when the US has promised to stick around until they’re reasonably sure that Iraqi law enforcement will be able to prevent that from happening.
Our troops have sacrificed a lot more than most of us have for this war. I don’t think it’s asking too much to sacrifice our pride and vote for the person who will work hard to make sure that those same troops will have a Commander in Chief who will work to make sure that the goal is achieved in Iraq, then allowing our troops to return home from the mission with honor.
I think she captures the essence of the problem.
In nearly every election I have voted in I seem to find myself unable to wholeheartedly support anyone. I seem to find my personal values on the side of none of the above, and I end up in the "well he is not as bad as he is..." category of voters.
The lesser of evils and all that.
I am cynic regarding the motivations of any person who desires to be president. As far as I have seen, I have yet to see a person run for the privilege of service and for the sake of service. I am skeptical of all of them. The only reason to go through this process, that consumes so much time, resource and money is for power.
The power to shape ideas, to shape the world and to just be able to say I am the President.
Once upon a time we had statement who served for the necessity of service, and I think there are those few who still do.
The rest are locked into a power struggle, an ideological tug of war for the shaping of America, and tied closely to that is the knowledge that their position confers power.
We are inundated with career politicians who serve for decades without ever accomplishing anything meaningful, because there is no consequence to failure and no motivation to actually effect change.
That is a consequence of voter apathy, of voters who habitually vote party line regardless of the qualifications of the person, and who vote for the incumbent by rule, claiming to value that spectral experience regardless of their actual record of achievement.
But.
All that aside, we still have an election approaching. My disgust with the sheep like proclivities of the Americans does not preclude me from recognizing that there are issues that are a higher priority, and that transcend my disgust for partisanship.
That's why if the right Democrat was running I would cast my support his way if his position on the most important issues to me was the right one.
And the most important issues to me are Terrorism (and the War), Immigration (and border security), Social Security Reform and Taxes.
The present crop of Dems do not in any of them, and they outright suck at Terrorism and the war.
Of the Republican McCain is the only one who seems to understand the importance of the war on terror is John McCain.
So while I may or may not endorse him for the nomination, should he win the nomination, against any of the Democrats, he would have my vote for that issue only.
The others have the next few months to impress me that they can appreciate the war on terror and that they can muster the nerve to fight it as it needs to be fought.
8 years of Bill's weak action against Al Qeada brought us no benefit. I won't be a part of a repeat of that, whether by vote or apathy.

I have to agree with you on this one to a point…
For me, My first gut instinct at the beginnning of the Presidential sweepstakes was to support Guliani. I faded toward Thompson for a while, but we all saw where that went.
I think Guliani ‘Gets it’ on the war on Terror and wouldn’t abandon our military in a crappy situation like any of the dems and maybe Huckabee would.
I also like his fiscal stance and seem to trust him a little more than Mccain when it comes to Judicial picks (lets not forget about THAT big matzo ball.)
I’m afraid that with Mccain having been in the senate for so long would compromise on his picks to get them through because thats just the general mindset of a senator.
We’ll see though after Florida what happens with Guliani. I think he made a vital error sitting it out till the Florida Primary, but we’ll see.
If he ends up getting out, I’ll shift to Mccain…. Romney, I’m just not buying what he’s selling… and the Huckster… well, he needs to go back to Arkansas.
I found your blog while Googling Ann Coulter and a supposed quote made by her about illegal immigration. Read through several of your posts and find a lot in common with you on the issues.
I believe that McCain is pretty good about the war against terrorism (his position on waterboarding notwithstanding) but find him to be so abysmal on illegal immigration that I just don’t think I could even hold my nose to vote for him.
Anyhow, just wanted to say “nice blog.” I’ll definitely be back for more.

I agree with you, but until the time comes to rally around the candidate, I’m not going to be happy with McCain. : )
I have three criteria when voting:
1. Strong nation defense: military issues and now immigration
2. Social issues. Whether people like it or not, a republic is meant to instill virtue and promote morality.
3. Economic issues. On this one, I stray from the conservative plantation. The free trade at any cost, ship our factories overseas because they work cheaper, and the 19th century revival of the “gilded age” with overpaid CEO’s who nickle and dime their workers to death just doesn’t seem like good policy to me.
So all a candidate has to do is win 2 out of 3. The Democrats lose the first because of their 1960’s hatred of American power.
They lose the second because of their support for every loser moral cause-abortion, anti-school prayer, starve invalids to death, gay marriage, sex education, etc.
Economically, I could vote for a Democrat.
It is just their hatred for their own country and their adoption of the immorality of the counter culture of the 60’s that stands in the way.
I only completely agree with McCain on one thing: That we must win in Iraq. On pretty much everything else, he is far to liberal (or a RINO, if you will) that I see no appreciable difference between a Mcain administration, and any other Democrat.
Liberal judges appointed (though they will be called Moderates)
Open borders
More taxes
My refusal to vote for McCain would not be a protect vote against the GOP (to “teach them a lesson”). It would be a refusal to sully my own Karma in directly contributing to inflicting McCain on the nation.
John McCain is an american hero. That does not mean that he is always (or even usually) right, politically.
McCain is my man and I feel strongly about that. I keep hearing ppl say that he’s not a ‘true conservative’ whatever that means. McCain is a true American and that is what is important to me.
He’ll never let our military be embarrassed and will back them up no matter what. I’m a one issue kind of person. I want someone who puts America first and will scare the living sh*t out of our enemies. That’s McCain.
