Hillary advocates garnishing wages of people who won’t enroll in health care

Published by Karl at 2:05 am under health care, hillary

Hillary seems to be channeling John Edwards on this one.

Back in September, he wanted to require preventive care whether you want it or not, and now she has come out saying she would support garnishing your wages and making enrollment mandatory.

Apparently, Socialism is not an option...

Clinton health plan may mean tapping pay

Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton said Sunday she might be willing to garnish the wages of workers who refuse to buy health insurance to achieve coverage for all Americans.

The New York senator has criticized presidential rival Barack Obama for pushing a health plan that would not require universal coverage. Clinton has not always specified the enforcement measures she would embrace, but when pressed on ABC''s "This Week," she said: "I think there are a number of mechanisms" that are possible, including "going after people's wages, automatic enrollment."

Clinton said such measures would apply only to workers who can afford health coverage but refuse to buy it, which puts undue pressure on hospitals and emergency rooms. With her proposals for subsidies, she said, "it will be affordable for everyone."

She will certainly not win any happy followers on the right with that one, but even some on the left are chafing:

Hillary's Garnish Talk: Has She Finally Cooked Her Own Goose?

Hang around US politics long enough, and you swear you see everything. Right here on this very forum as of late, I have seen Hillary Clinton's supporters, now driven into a losing momentum frenzy by the closeness of the race, devolve to spewing hate at MoveOn.org, DailyKos, Ted Kennedy, Oprah, and hundreds of others who had the audacity to support her opponent. I've even seen racist commentary when Stevie Wonder stepped up as an Obama fan. But, you rarely see a candidate put their foot in their mouth so theatrically, and right before a Super Tuesday, like Senator Clinton has in regards of her intention to garnish peoples' wages if they don't buy into her health plan.

Now to be fair, this wasn't just her idea. John Edwards had a similar plan. But Mr. Edwards is no longer running, and I highly doubt he would have stepped into the hornets' nest that Senator Clinton now has with this issue that has put the skids on her campaign, and possibly cooked her goose in the election.

Kevin Drum of WASHINGTON MONTHLY has a few comments about this, which bear thinking about: Not the least of which was the specter of the IRS getting involved in health care enforcement -

"First, do we really want the IRS enforcing healthcare mandates? That's not what the IRS is for, and Americans are (rightly) suspicious of using the IRS as a quasi-police agency to enforce whatever federal law the current administration feels like using it for. This is probably not a constructive road to go down.

Considering this is from the notorious Democratic Underground, you can see where she may have jumped the shark.

Ironically, Reuters just proclaimed:

Hillary Clinton may unite Republicans

Judging by the reactions, she may do more than that.  Even Daily Kos is showing mixed reactions.   Not surprisingly, the defense of her at Kos is either that it's for your own good, or the typical Clintonian sophistry of she didn't actually say garnish.  Nope, she just said she would force you to enroll and take your wages to pay for it.

A rose by any other name....

I’m all for universal health care, on the pay-as-you-go system. Health care is not a right. It’s a service provided by professionals who have to work hard for many years to achieve a level of proficiency that ensures that, provide they are conscientious, gives a better than even chance of prolonging your life and retaining your health.

If health-care is a right, then health-care professionals are the “dumbest smart people” I know of, spending tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars and years of study to enter into indentured servitude to yet another segment of the population that wants something for nothing, or something at the expense of the wealthy.

    Socialism in any form sucks.
