One more look at Geno’s- For Shelli, a disgruntled reader

Published by Karl under Illegal immigration, racism

The Geno’s story I posted last night brought some interesting comments, and frankly I just cannot let them go.

I have posted three blogs on the subject, and the same person left a comment on two.  The fact is the comments went from liberal dogma to racism and insult, so I think it only fair to respond in full.  I responded to the first one personally as well as on the blog, but Shelli posted additional comments after the fact.  So, in order of appearance, here is Shelli, with my rebuttal.

Odd however that Shelli is apparently Canadian (Ontario).  So her outrage is totally bogus on a national level.

Shelli’s first comment was on my initial story from Jun 2006.

Many of these posts are filled with ignorance and bigotry. I can’t help but laugh at the comment about assymilating into “our” culture. First of all, America is diverse with numerous cultures - so which culture, do you propose we all assymilate into?

Believe it or not, while sub cultures exist, there really is a wider broad culture in America that everyone, in my opinion, needs to tie into at least marginally.  it is that culture that contains the Constitution and our freedom that so many in the world yearn for.

Also, if assymilation is what you are after, why did you not “assymilate” into the culture of America’s original people - the aboriginals?

Liberals love throwing the Indians in our face.

Yes, it is America - Joseph Vento needs to respect the myriad of cultures and languages that make up America. If he can’t do that, he has no business operating a business in America. The sign is nothing more than a bigot’s method to discriminate against people who happen to speak a different language or those who come from other countries.

There is no discrimination is everyone has to speak the same.  And since Joe and his staff take a great delight in teaching people how to order in English, all I see is this being a great learning experience for anyone who wants a Cheese Steak Sandwich.

Philly says “Speak English” sign at Geno’s is OK

Published by Karl under Illegal immigration

An end to the saga of Geno’s in Philedelphia that I blogged on back in 2006.

‘Speak English’ Signs OK at Philly Shop

The owner of a famous cheesesteak shop did not discriminate when he posted signs asking customers to speak English, a city panel ruled Wednesday.

In a 2-1 vote, a Commission on Human Relations panel found that two signs at Geno’s Steaks telling customers, “This is America: WHEN ORDERING ‘PLEASE SPEAK ENGLISH,’” do not violate the city’s Fair Practices Ordinance.

Commissioners Roxanne E. Covington and Burt Siegel voted to dismiss the complaint, finding that the sign does not communicate that business will be “refused, withheld or denied.”

In a dissenting opinion, Commissioner Joseph J. Centeno said he thought the signs did discourage some customers.

Score one for common sense.   Congrats to Joe.  Now, hopefully, some nutbag doesn’t file a civil suit for getting his feelings bruised.

Global Warming: Is it still Global Warming when it isn’t getting warmer?

Published by Karl under Global Warming

They have a great setup designed to measure the increases in ocean temperature.

The only problem is that the temperature is down since 2003.  Via Hot Air:

Evidence that global warming isn’t happening? Not necessarily, although it certainly hasn’t been happening over the past year. Evidence that the predictive modeling in this area isn’t nearly as nuanced as it needs be? Pretty much, yeah.

Some 3,000 scientific robots that are plying the ocean have sent home a puzzling message. These diving instruments suggest that the oceans have not warmed up at all over the past four or five years. That could mean global warming has taken a breather. Or it could mean scientists aren’t quite understanding what their robots are telling them.

This is puzzling in part because here on the surface of the Earth, the years since 2003 have been some of the hottest on record. But Josh Willis at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory says the oceans are what really matter when it comes to global warming

In recent years, heat has actually been flowing out of the ocean and into the air. This is a feature of the weather phenomenon known as El Nino. So it is indeed possible the air has warmed but the ocean has not. But it’s also possible that something more mysterious is going on.

That becomes clear when you consider what’s happening to global sea level. Sea level rises when the oceans get warm because warmer water expands. This accounts for about half of global sea level rise. So with the oceans not warming, you would expect to see less sea level rise. Instead, sea level has risen about half an inch in the past four years. That’s a lot…

It’s … possible that some of the heat has gone even deeper into the ocean, he says. Or it’s possible that scientists need to correct for some other feature of the planet they don’t know about. It’s an exciting time, though, with all this new data about global sea temperature, sea level and other features of climate.

The Obama speech: More interesting reactions.

Published by Karl under obama, racism

Obviously, I am not talking from the left.  For them, the man for whom the worshiped is still worthy of that adoration.

No, I am talking about those on the Wright right who are willing to look at the facts and evaluate what is happening here, unfettered by Obama-mania.

One note though.  It occurred to me that acting shocked and surprised that Obama has sunk to moral equivalency and relativism is disingenuous.  The fact is that the Democrats have lived in a world where the actions of many are dismissed, excused, forgiven and forgotten, solely based on party affiliation.  If you doubt that, look up the varied crimes and indiscretions by McKinney, Kennedy, McDermott, Hastings, Frank, Byrd, Clinton, Kennedy Jr, Ballance, Reynolds, Studds and many many more.

But I digress.  Where to start…

Hot Air Says:

ABC News took a closer look at the Barack Obama speech on race yesterday and found curious discrepancies from past positions. Brian Ross and Avni Patel also note similar contradictions in Obama’s positions on Tony Rezko. It looks like some of the media has finally begun vetting the Democratic front-runner for the nomination:

Buried in his eloquent, highly praised speech on America’s racial divide, Sen. Barack Obama contradicted more than a year of denials and spin from him and his staff about his knowledge of Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s controversial sermons.

Similarly, Obama also has only recently given a much fuller accounting of his relationship with indicted political fixer Antoin “Tony” Rezko, a longtime friend, who his campaign once described as just one of “thousands of donors.”

Until yesterday, Obama said the only thing controversial he knew about Rev. Wright was his stand on issues relating to Africa, abortion and gay marriage. …

His initial reaction to the initial ABC News broadcast of Rev. Wright’s sermons denouncing the U.S. was that he had never heard his pastor of 20 years make any comments that were anti-U.S. until the tape was played on air.
