Not to be redundant (i love the carpenter analogy, btw)... BUT... If guns kill people, I can blame misspelled words on my pencil (or at least, my word processor)...
Guns, have been around for generations, centuries in fact. Eliminating them from the law abiding portion of society, doesn't eliminate them. Average Joes, don't have bombs, it doesn't eliminate them (anyone seen the news and suicide bombers?). Now to be fair, I wouldn't want to carry a bomb, too volital.
Studies have been done, in places where guns become illegal (suburbs of chicago) the crime rate rises. Criminals know the laws, and they understand them.
If there is danger behind door number one, say a home owner with a loaded rifle, and safety behind door number two, a home in a township where guns are illegal, and people are not allowed to defend themselves, a criminal will choose house number two. The more guns are eliminated from law abiding society, the higher our crime rate will be. We will face more criminals, shooting without fear of retaliation. We already have this fact well demonstrated on school grounds. Colleges, that deny people with concealed carry permits, to carry, allow their students to die.
Virginia Tech was tragic, and our hearts bleed for the families. If students on campus could have defended themselves, and shot back, maybe only the assasin would have died! High school shootings, in rural southern areas, where students had hunting rifles in their trucks, killed NO ONE in several cases. Students, who handled guns regularly, for hunting, injured but didn't kill the would be murderer.
You have to fight fire with fire, and fire power, with fire power.
Guns are our safety, and our security not a threat to a government who fears weapons in the hands of those who could overthrow it.

Yes, it is sadly ironic. It's truly a shame when anyone is a victim of domestic violence or criminal violence in general.

It's a poor workman that blames the tools though. A good carpenter can still do a good job with bad tools, but they can do an even better job with good tools. A bad carpenter will be a bad carpenter regardless of the quality of his or her tools. I know, because I'm a bad carpenter.
