Obama picks a fairly un-fresh VP, tells Hillary to keep the ‘change’

Published by Karl at 1:49 am under Democrats, election 2008, hillary, obama

Obama and his flock of acolytes have consistently portrayed him as the younger, hipper candidate.  The candidate of change.  The fresh wind in the sour air of politics, the new voice.  Someone not a part of politics as usual.

They have charged that John McCain is the old man, the voice of stagnation.  An old hide bound white guy in a sea of politics ruled by old white men.  A guy who has made a career out of politics as usual, and partisan bickering.

So it comes as no shock to learn that Obama has taken the fresh, bold and utterly hipper step of choosing a running mate who is an old white man, who has made a career out of politics as usual and partisan bickering.

Finally:  Change we can believe in.

Why?  Frankly, because he wants to win.  Now, granted that Hillary has more support, and a ticket with her might be the golden ticket for a sure win, but imagine being president and constantly having to watch your back, waiting for the chance for her and Bill to stick a (figuratively speaking only here) knife into it.  Hillary is just too ambitious.

I found this to be an interesting and accurate assessment by Ron Fournier(AP):1

Analysis: Biden pick shows lack of confidence

The candidate of change went with the status quo.

In picking Sen. Joe Biden to be his running mate, Barack Obama sought to shore up his weakness — inexperience in office and on foreign policy — rather than underscore his strength as a new-generation candidate defying political conventions.

He picked a 35-year veteran of the Senate — the ultimate insider — rather than a candidate from outside Washington, such as Govs. Tim Kaine of Virginia or Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas; or from outside his party, such as Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska; or from outside the mostly white male club of vice presidential candidates Hillary Rodham Clinton didn’t even make his short list.

The picks say something profound about Obama: For all his self-confidence, the 47-year-old Illinois senator worried that he couldn’t beat Republican John McCain without help from a seasoned politician willing to attack. The Biden pick is the next logistical step in an Obama campaign that has become more negative — a strategic decision that may be necessary but threatens to run counter to his image.

In other words, in the debate over experience, Obama just blinked.  His pick is a fairly clear admission that it is a weak element to his campaign and his qualifications.

Reactions vary:

Jay at Stop the ACLU:2

What an anti-climax! Obama picks someone that could actually challenge his own arrogance! After all the build up, this is quite deflating. No wonder he made it weekend news.

 Dan Reihl:3

i had a feeling it would be Biden - it makes sense from Obama’s point of view. The other folks lacked his International rep and experience. But I can’t believe Obama doesn’t feel like he’s sitting on a keg of dynamite with Biden - just hoping he doesn’t go off.

Flopping aces remember some choice Biden gaffes (with lots of video):4

Works for me, now we can play that soundbite of that “clean” black guy comment from the guy over and over again.

Patrick Ruffini also remembers Biden’s worst enemy (his mouth) and concludes:5

Please, PLEASE, let it be him.

The left loves him…6

Here’s what our own Jennn Fusion said about an Obama/Biden ticket on May 20th…(emphasis original)

An Obama-Biden “ticket brand” would exude: persuasive public speaking, daring but calculated in foreign policy, full of progressive solutions and aimed at changing all the “malarkey” in Washington.

Agreed.

…and doesn’t love him… 7

Have I mentioned that Joe Biden “wholeheartedly supported” the actions of federal agents at Waco and reportedly “visibly sneered at witnesses in Senate hearings who questioned agents’ acts.”

As to Biden teaching constitutional law, he’s been in the Senate since Nixon was in the White House. He became a Senator after a three or four year non-descript career as a lawyer.

I’m going to try and come around to believing I should vote for this ticket. It won’t be easy. And even if I do, I’m not going to lay off criticizing him.

What the heck, this might actually get interesting now.   Obama has taken as hi partner a guy who has more experience, thinks Obama is naive8 and has a history of saying stupid things.

Memeorandum has an extensive round up.

Because if you’re going to go into Pakistan — which is already our policy by the way, if there’s actionable intelligence — you need actionable intelligence from moderates within Pakistan working with you. Now if you’re already going to say I’m going to disregard whatever the country thinks and going to invade, the likelihood you’re getting the cooperation you need evaporates. It’s a well intended notion he has, but it’s a very naïve way of figuring out how you’re going to conduct foreign policy.” [back]

    From yesterday’s Rush Limbaugh Show:

First thing he says here in 1988, Joe Biden running for the White House for the first time — and, of course, the first thing he says here, the narrator in the ad says, “The White House isn’t the place to learn how to deal with international crisis, the balance of power, war and peace, the economic future of the next generation.”

Somehow I don’t think that Barack Obama’s going to find that an easy hurdle to jump, coming as it did from his own running mate.

Of course, Barack gave a pretty good clue who his running mate would be at Saddleback with his “above my pay grade” comment, which — again as Rush noted — is a phrase lifted straight out of Joe Biden’s mouth.
