Republicans dodge a bullet and narrowly avoid a Democrat Senate super majority

Published by Karl at 11:57 pm under Democrats, congress

Much too close for my liking.  At the end of the election in November, it seemed fairly likely the Democrats had avoided their much lusted after super majority in the US Senate.  A super majority would have been a 60 seat Democrat majority, which would have prevented the Republicans from any hope of blocking the Democrat thug state.

It hovered at 57 seats (including the two independents who caucus with the Democrats) until Stevens, the legal embroiled Alaskan Senator lost in the last minutes of the race.  Then the Minnesota race between Franken and Coleman went into a mandatory recount, which is still underway and is very much anyone’s race.

Note:  Minnesota?  What are you thinking when Franken is even considered a credible candidate, let alone being in a head to head contest..  Even for Democrats, this is bottom feeding of the lowest order.  And Franken has taken every recount strategy from Al ‘count em till I win’ Gore, and has even said he may appeal to the US Senate to intervene.  Al has changed from the biggest loud mouth to the  biggest crybaby.  And let’s not forget all the magically found votes that keep aparing, a winning strategy the Democrats have employed before.  If he wins, Minnesota will have sunk to an all time low.

Anyway…

And the final chance was in Georgia, where Chambliss and Martin faced a mandatory run off election, as Chambliss, the winner, did not get 50% or more of the vote thanks to a 3rd party candidate.

And what a run off it was, as Obama and his supporters dumped millions into an ad campaign, and both campaigns brought in anyone they could to secure the pivotal seat.

It now appears Chambliss has won, and it is a good thing, as that firmly ends the Democrat Super majority, at least until the 2010 Senate elections.

The possibility of the Democrats having the power to muscle anything they want past the opposition is frightening, and yes skeptics, if the Republicans had that power it would be equally disastrous, though I would likely agree with some of the policies they would push.

One of the things that provides balance in Washington is gridlock, the ability to make sure that both parties really do agree on the merits of the laws they pass.

The Democrats have some targets on their radar that concern me, such as over reaching environmental extremism, renewing restrictions on gun ownership and more.   Having the house firmly in Pelosi’s pocket, the Senate was the beachhead on any hope of laws that made sense, a hope that was severely dashed by the recent spat of RINOs in office.

Now, moving forward, the Republicans have two objectives they should maintain.

First, maintain integrity as Republicans and reestablish conservatism as something tangible.

And two, they need to plan most diligently to try and prevent another beating in the 2010 and 2012 elections.

They need to reestablish the positives of conservatism, the smaller government and fiscal responsibility that used to mean something in the Republican party, before they went nuts and started spending like drunken sailors.

They need to re-validate the trust of the conservative base.  They need to seek withing the party for fresh, real and younger voices like Palin, to reenergize the conservatives.

And mostly, they need to get the lobbyists out of their pockets, and show that maybe there are some ethical responsible conservatives.

We can only hope.

Because if they fail, if we hand over absolute control of the country to the Democrats, we will lose any sense of freedom and free market in this country, and instead we will see more and more nanny state socialism emerge.

Maybe I am doom-saying.  Perhaps the Democrats can be trusted.

Then again, judging by how they are spending us into oblivion with the bailout, and the shape of the country after just two years of a Democrat congress, maybe not.

Not only that, since my state legislature has a Democrat super majority, I can say from experience that they pretty much do whatever they want.  And the results are not so good.
