Is the “students pledge to Obama” story a hoax? Possibly…

Published by Karl under Obama mania!, Schools

I posted this story yesterday, and today more information has surfaced that bears mentioning.

First up is this site that is claiming it is a hoax.  The author says (emphasis original):

The Clark County School District calls the story “bogus!!” with the exclamation points clear.  Spokesmen for the district complain they’ve been fielding calls all day, none with details.  Their check of the district’s schools turns up nothing.

None of the bloggers bothered to check the facts, it appears.  The story so far checks out to be a hoax.  No one can name the school, no one can name the kid, no one can corroborate the story.

I should probably mention that this is hardly proof it is a hoax.  Lack of info is not necessarily falsity.

I spoke again with David Roddy at the Clark County School District offices.  He confirmed that as of late this afternoon (January 30) no one had stepped forward to identify the school where the event is alleged to have occurred, nor the name of anyone involved, nor any other fact that could be corroborated to vouch for the accuracy of the story.

Gut check: Could this happen in your city?

Published by Karl under ick

0129frozenI am specifically addressing large urban cities with that question.  And the question is not whether or not someone could die in this manner, but rather would those around him show such an utter lack of feeling when his body was discovered?

All too many of us would answer yes, and many of those who answer know are probably wrong.  This is the world we live in:

Frozen in indifference: Life goes on around body found in vacant warehouse

This city has not always been a gentle place, but a series of events over the past few, frigid days causes one to wonder how cold the collective heart has grown.

It starts with a phone call made by a man who said his friend found a dead body in the elevator shaft of an abandoned building on the city’s west side.

“He’s encased in ice, except his legs, which are sticking out like Popsicle sticks,” the caller phoned to tell this reporter.

“Why didn’t your friend call the police?”

Blago is out. The Chicago political machine has one less cog

Published by Karl under Democrats, Idiots, Politics, hypocrites

In an amazing feat, the Illinois legislature ousted Gov Blagojevich for abuse of power, then barred him from holding any public office in the state.

I call this amazing with my tongue firmly in cheek, in that in recent years, Democrats, even those caught red handed like Blago was, typical get away with it by claiming they need to go to rehab or something.

Indeed, Blago sang a great tune at the end of his impeachment hearing professing his innocence, despite the FBI audio to the contrary.

In fact, I will have to say that Blago actually impressed me at one point with his honesty, in a touch of sweet irony.  He said in his defense of his comments about getting more for the senate seat1 :

Brown: Are you saying you didn’t say that?

Blagojevich: I’m simply saying we haven’t heard the tapes, so I can’t confirm or deny whether that is precisely what was said, but having said that, let me just saying this.

The first one you alluded to. The governor can make himself a senator.

First graders pledge allegiance…to Obama? Updated.

Published by Karl under Obama mania!

Minor Update:  Pamela at Atlas Shrugs and Ron Paul have both linked to this.  Still waiting for more verification.  The Jawa Report is also running the story.

Not directly of course.  Instead a large picture of him is projected during the pledge every morning.

Note:  I was not able to get any secondary validation to this story which I learned about about on Ping Back, so I am monitoring this to ensure it is  not a hoax, but either way, here is the story.

Pledge of Allegiance Becomes Pledge to Obama

A parent in the Clark County School District of Las Vegas, Henderson area reported today that his son, who is in 1st grade, came home yesterday saying that he didn’t want to go back to school anymore.

When asked why, the boy said that during the Pledge of Allegiance the teacher put up a large image of Obama next to the flag.

Thinking that the boy might be exaggerating, the man asked his son if he was sure, and suggested that by “large” he might mean an 8×10 photo of the president. The boy apparently said “No, it is a large picture of Obama and when we are done, the teacher turns off the image.”

The stimulus price continues to rise. Can we afford it?

Published by Karl under congress, obama

Simply put, NO.

The problem is that despite our promises of hope and change and new ways of doing the business of government, pork spending has infested the stimulus.

Mob Museums.

Dog parks.

Smoking cessation funding.

Birth control.

Read this post from Red State via Freedom Talks:

The GOP leadership in the House put out the following list of 20 facts about the Democrats’ $1 trillion spending plan.

Rather than working with Republicans on a proposal that lets families, small businesses, entrepreneurs, and the self-employed keep more of what they earn to create jobs and help fix our economy, it seems congressional Democrats are prepared to barrel ahead with the same-old, same-old – more and more aimless spending – at a time when the American people expect so much more out of their elected officials in Washington. For a taste of just how badly Capitol Hill Democrats have strayed from the vision of a bipartisan plan to get our economy moving again, take a look at these 20 fast facts about their bloated plan:

Little Blue Book of Quotations from Chairman Obama

Published by Karl under Obama mania!

little_blue_book-smallA friend sent me this, and I didn’t believe it at first.

But it is true.  Amazon has for sale a book called the “Pocket Obama.” It is a small blue book, packed with his most inspiring quotes.  Here is Amazon’s official description (emphasis mine).

Printed in a size that easily fits into pocket or purse, this book is an anthology of quotations borrowed from Barack Obama’s speeches and writings. POCKET OBAMA serves as a reminder of the amazing power of oratory and the remarkable ability of this man to move people with his words. His superb and captivating oratory style has earned comparisons to John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, and this collection presents words that catapulted his remarkable rise to the American Presidency. Includes themes of democracy, politics, war, terrorism, race, community, jurisprudence, faith, personal responsibility, national identity, and above all, his hoped-for vision of a new America. This book is truly a primer for readers who want to examine the substance of his thought and reflect on the next great chapter in the American story. It is an unofficial requirement for every citizen to own, to read, and to carry this book at all times.

Sunday Musings: The “A” word

Published by Karl under Abortion, Sunday Musings

The purpose of these Sunday musings was to help me by allowing me to ponder recent thoughts feelings and events.

Not necessarily to discuss policy, politics and the other topics of my daily rantings.

But today I have to stretch that, because this has a week where the “A” word has been in all around me.

I am talking about abortion.

It was the anniversary of Roe Wade earlier this week, a day many celebrate, and some mourn.

It was also the week where the President overruled the restrictions on overseas abortion funding.

Both of these are areas where I find  a lot of internal conflict, but they are also areas where I also apply a great deal of resignation.

Abortion is here to stay, and once again, we are exporting it with federal dollars.

Now, the first of these is simply a statement of fact.  Roe Wade will never be overturned, and it will prevent states from making their own determinations about.  Several have tried, they all fail.  While the subject of abortion is hot enough, my dislike of the interference in federalism is worse.

The economic stimulus: White guys need not apply

Published by Karl under congress, racism

As you may know, I am a fairly strong minded cynic when it comes to politics.  I generally expect the worst of politicians and I am generally not disappointed.

But sometimes even I read or hear something so outrageous I get surprised.  Sometimes a politician says something that stuns me.

This is NOT one of those cases.  This was just too typical.

Robert Reich: Keep stimulus money away from skilled workers and “white male construction workers”

Partial transcript:

REICH: …”I am concerned, as I’m sure many of you are, that these jobs not simply go to high-skilled people who are already professionals or to white male construction workers…I have nothing against white male construction workers, I’m just saying there are other people who have needs as well.”

I always say that context matters, so to keep this in perspective, this is the context:

Reich wrote on his blog:

The stimulus plan will create jobs repairing and upgrading the nation’s roads, bridges, ports, levees, water and sewage system, public-transit systems, electricity grid, and schools. And it will kick-start alternative, non-fossil based sources of energy (wind, solar, geothermal, and so on); new health-care information systems; and universal broadband Internet access.
