With Obama president, people finally care and Hollywood is making a pledge

Published by Karl at 12:45 am under Obama mania!, hollywierd

One of the side effects of the Post Obama era is that now people finally care.  On the radio today many liberals finally feel patriotic, and are willing to wave flags.

And finally, public service is not just a good idea it is a great idea.

And I am not even suggesting it is a bad thing.  I am only pointing out that a) every politician and administration has pretty much suggested the need for more public and community service and b) for some reason only now is it considered widely popular and obtainable.

And I wonder why.  Public service is nothing new.  Community efforts are nothing new.  They have existed as long as we have had history.

And if anything, this is a repudiation of Obama’s earlier suggestions that only the Government can fix these problems.

Problems with the poor, with hunger,  with housing, with schools…all can be solved by the community, something many people have advocated for decades.

Yet suddenly in our post Obama era, it is a new great and wondrous idea.

I find it a little silly and immature.  Community service and volunteering existed long before Obama was a household name, but then it was just in the background.  Now it is a bigger fad in Hollywood than Botox and Darfur.

The net is abuzz with this MTV pledge video where Hollywood’s elite are awash with a desire to improve themselves, improve the world and serve mankind, all thanks to Obama!

Ok, the ending is downright creepy.

Some of the pledges are idiotic.  To be a better parent.  Demi wants to smile more.  One guy sagely offers to not flip people off on the freeway.

Hoorah.

Oh please.  Are you saying that in the pre Obama world you were a worse parent?  That you cared less? That you smiled less?

These are people who have completely lost touch with reality in their elitism and privilege.  And now they have a new toy.  It’s called caring, isn’t it cute?  Call your rich friends, and ask them to try it.

It’s transformational.

On a larger scale, the same thing is happening with service, but also in a different area.

Suddenly, people are inspired to achieve their dreams.  A generation of black kids will be told that their dreams are no longer unattainable, that being president is no longer out of reach to minorities.  On its face that is so wrong.

Of course it was attainable, otherwise Obama would not have attained it.   The real lesson of his ascension is that it always was attainable…but maybe people’s attitudes about it were the hindrance.  Self help gurus figured this one out a long time ago.  Attitudes matter.  Expctations matter.

If you tell yourself you have no hope, you truly won’t.

Maybe this is nothing to complain about.  Perhaps this is one of those areas where the results are what matters, not the method.  Who cares why people suddenly feel inspired to give a shit, isn’t the fact they do the important part?

I suppose.  But I cannot help but be concrend that this is just a fad driven by a cult of personality.

So I am left with the real question in all this, which is not “are you inspired?”

It is “why are you only now inspired?”  And will you stay that way when Obama’s glitter starts to fade?

Final Thought:  If he is your inspiration to do all this, I hope that he never stops being inspiring.
