The Obama Administration makes their worst suggestion ever: make the veterans pay for their own medical care
And that means for service related injuries too….like war injuries.
Yep…liberals sure do know how to support the troops…
Senators slam plan for wounded vets to use private insurance
Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki confirmed Tuesday that the Obama administration is considering a controversial plan to make veterans pay for treatment of service-related injuries with private insurance.
But the proposal would be “dead on arrival” if it’s sent to Congress, Sen. Patty Murray, D-Washington, said.
Murray used that blunt terminology when she told Shinseki that the idea would not be acceptable and would be rejected if formally proposed. Her remarks came during a hearing before the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs about the 2010 budget.
No official proposal to create such a program has been announced publicly, but veterans groups wrote a pre-emptive letter last week to President Obama voicing their opposition to the idea after hearing the plan was under consideration.
The groups also cited an increase in “third-party collections” estimated in the 2010 budget proposal — something they said could be achieved only if the Veterans Administration started billing for service-related injuries.
Asked about the proposal, Shinseki said it was under “consideration.”
“A final decision hasn’t been made yet,” he said.
Currently, veterans’ private insurance is charged only when they receive health care from the VA for medical issues that are not related to service injuries, like getting the flu.
Charging for service-related injuries would violate “a sacred trust,” Veterans of Foreign Wars spokesman Joe Davis said. Davis said the move would risk private health care for veterans and their families by potentially maxing out benefits paying for costly war injury treatments.
A second senator, North Carolina Republican Richard Burr, said he agreed that the idea should not go forward.
“I think you will give that up” as a revenue stream if it is included in this April’s budget, Burr said.
Murray said she’d already discussed her concerns with the secretary the previous week.
“I believe that veterans with service-connected injuries have already paid by putting their lives on the line,” Murray said in her remarks. “I don’t think we should nickel and dime them for their care.”
Eleven of the most prominent veterans organizations have been lobbying Congress to oppose the idea. In the letter sent last week to the president, the groups warned that the idea “is wholly unacceptable and a total abrogation of our government’s moral and legal responsibility to the men and women who have sacrificed so much.”
The groups included The American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.
At the time, a White House spokesman would neither confirm nor deny the option was being considered.
Bad idea…really bad.
Let’s see. The same administration that wants to give tens of billions of dollars to GM, Citigroup, AIG, and a host of other banks and manufacturers wants men and women injured in service to their country to pay for the medical care that arises from these injuries? In what universe does Shinseki and the Obama administration live, anyway?
And people used to complain that Bush didn’t care enough about veteran care - even though he increased the VA budget by 56% from 2001 to 2008. Bush never offered the notion that the nation should shirk its duty to those who gave their health for the defense of America, especially not in the same week in which his administration signed a record omnibus bill with 8,000 pork items in it. In fact, I don’t think any administration has ever signaled such a policy, mostly because previous administrations weren’t dumb enough to try it, let alone crass enough to consider it an area to save a little cash.
Obama said he wanted to bring bipartisanship to Washington, and he may succeed here — by annoying both Democrats and Republicans. Patty Murray (D-WA) declared that any such suggestion would be “dead on arrival” in the Senate. Richard Burr (R-NC) told Shinseki not to count on that revenue stream. If Hope and Change means dunning wounded warriors, Capitol Hill will say thanks, but no thanks, in as united a voice as one can imagine these days.
It’s just another incompetent moment in an administration trying to set a record for them.

And a retired Four Star General, at that!
Obambozo and company do not like us. Actually they hate us. So, their hatred will come down to leaving us with nothing. I am 30 percent for carpal tunnel syndrome. Twenty years of turning wrenches on airplanes will leave a mark. But I do not us the VA that much. Last summer, I was to have a colonoscopy and wound up with an arrogant bastard for a doc. I had them pull the IV and left, went home.
I still owe for the golightly(look it up) that is the prep. If you have used this it is an extremely uncomfortable process. The copay on this poisonous crap is eight bucks. I think it’s up to about fifteen bucks due to interest. To Secretary Shinseki, shove it up your ass(pun INTENDED)
Even that dipshit from Washington State was smart enough to say DOA for this plan. Yeah, I called “Sneakers” Murray a dipshit, so what?
And yes, I do have Tricare coverage for myself and the missus. I am retired from active service. It was earned.
You would think that here in America we could definitely treat our veterans a little better though, or at least as well as the people who mistakenly bought a house with 3-400 square feet more than they could afford. . .
[...] I reported this last week as a plan presented by the Sec of Veterans Affairs, but at the time it did not seem to have Obama’s approval. Today, the Commander of The American Legion suggests that it is, and that it seems to be moving forward: The American Legion Strongly Opposed to President’s Plan to Charge Wounded Heroes for Treatment [...]
