Was the bomb a dud or a hoax?

Is Kim Jong Il a fraud?  A Fake?  Was his nuclear test a fraud?

That is the question being raised in some circles.

U.S. doubts Korean test was nuclear

U.S. intelligence agencies say, based on preliminary indications, that North Korea did not produce its first nuclear blast yesterday.

U.S. officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said that seismic readings show that the conventional high explosives used to create a chain reaction in a plutonium-based device went off, but that the blast’s readings were shy of a typical nuclear detonation.

Well who knows.  Kim Jong Il is hardly the most stable guy in the world and a hoax is certainly possible.

Why?  To force us to deal as if it was true.

And that really brings up an interesting question.  Should we?  They are demanding 1 on 1 talks.  Why?

I say tell them to pack sand.  Plant a few nukes in Japan and South Korea to maintain balance, and tell him to piss off.

But I am not a diplomat obviously so I am sure cooler heads will prevail.

But it makes me wonder.  Why is the US the pivot person here?  Why do we have to solve this issue?

I thought so many countries resented our position of prominence and arrogance.  So why think we can solve this one?

Let China rein in the little maniac.  They made him.

And already the finger waving has begun, as liberals blame this on Bush, while conservatives point out how Clinton is a contributor.

I blame the UN and China as well, so there is plenty of blame to share.

But all this may be for nothing, if Kim is just playing head games with the world.

North Korea conducts nuclear test

North Korea said Monday it has performed its first-ever nuclear weapons test.

U.S. and South Korean officials could not immediately confirm the report.

The North’s official Korean Central News Agency said the underground test was performed successfully and there was no radioactive leakage from the site.

South Korean intelligence officials said a seismic wave of magnitude-3.58 had been detected in North Hamkyung province, according to Yonhap. It said the test was conducted at 10:36 a.m. (9:36 p.m. EDT Sunday) in Hwaderi near Kilju city on the northeast coast, citing defense officials.

North Korean scientists “successfully conducted an underground nuclear test under secure conditions,” the KCNA report said, adding this was “a stirring time when all the people of the country are making a great leap forward in the building of a great prosperous powerful socialist nation.”

I am sure this will be Bush’s fault somehow, even though a few people point to the 1994 Framework Agreement as being a huge contributor.

And this is of course an excellent opportunity for the UN to do NOTHING.

No matter.  God help us.
